SPARF Questions Answered From: nicholso@pioneer.arc.nasa.gov (Melvin H. Nicholson YBH) Date: Fri, 26 Jul 1991 20:31:17 +0000 The following file contains a list of the more commonly asked questions I've been getting about the SPARF rules (and I've even answered them!) Q: Do I have to train everybody? A: Almost. Some injured players will be specifically dismissed from training for a specific period of time (during which they will lose skill points FAST) All other players MUST be either trained, or cut from the roster. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: What are the chances of injury? Q: How much fatigue is too much? A: Every time your player does something in a game, an injury check (or several injury checks, depending on what is was) is/are made. The exact chance for an injury is (as stated in the rules) (1/3) * 2^(age/2 + fatigue/4) * (1 / average checks per game) If a player is injured, you will receive a report explaining the extent of of the injury. (player will be unavailble for train for x weeks, then will need an additional y weeks before he can safely play again) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q: What skills are the most important? To balance the constants in the game, I set four teams (one with 30 mark, 25 in all other skill for every player, one with 30 kick, then 25s, etc.) against each other and fiddle with the constants until all four teams did roughly the same so all skills will OVERALL be of roughly equal value. In a particular position, some skills may come up more often than others... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q: How many leagues will there be? Q: How many games are in a season? Q: How long is the pre-season? After all the shuffling was done, there is now a total of 24 teams. These will be split into three league divisions for the first season (rock, paper, and scissors) Performance this season will dictate the reorganisation next season. (Teams who do better will be placed in the more prestigious league divisions and receive more popularity and better coaching staffs (gasp)) You will play each of the other teams in your division twice (once at home, once away) for a total of 14 games. In addition, you wil have a three week pre-season, a one week mid-season break, plus up to four post-season games in the post-season (possibly less, depending on how you do) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: my mail to nicholso@pioneer.arc.nasa.gov bounced, what do I do? The nice people at UC Berkeley have set me up with the account listed below which will forward mail to me. mel@soda.berkeley.edu --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: My mail to there bounced too. Hmmm. You could try mailing the other players to see if any nice soul is willing to forward something (after I post the SPARF manager address book) or try again, but this time standing on only one leg. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: I didn't receive this in mail directly, is that a problem? Nope. Your first peice of personal mail isn't due until this weekend, when you get your computer-munched roster with stats filled in. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stay tuned to rec.games.pbm for more details.
