Diplomacy Magazine -- Chapter Two From: loeb@geocub.UUCP (Daniel LOEB) Date: Wed, 25 Sep 1991 15:27:51 +0000 Issue #258 of Chapter Two of the Electronic Protocol By Daniel Loeb (loeb@geocub.greco-prog.fr) September 25, 1991 ------------------------------------------------------------- Electronic Protocol Games played on the Diplomacy Adjudicator ------------------------------------------------------------- *** SPECIAL NOTICE *** J U D G E I S U P Ken Lowe is back in town, and Judge is working again. Please send your orders to the Judge. Please signon as a replacement player to the games indicated as there were some losses during Judge's absence. Also, please volunteer to be game master if you can! We need more! **** TABLE OF CONTENTS **** Letters to the editor Information about the Judge (reprint) Corrections by Ken List of game openings List of EP games on the DA (with new explanation!) List of Gamemasters **** LETTERS TO THE EDITOR **** (1) Conversation with Bob Donaldson Bob: I have been out of email touch for most of the last two years, but I did win two games as Austria (blind rules) way back when you started this thing. I was surprised and glad when your 'zine showed up in my in-box. Can you update me on JUDGE? What the various 'rule sets' are, what the email address is, what the orders formats are, etc. I may try to jump in again! DL: The diplomacy Adjudicator JUDGE is JUDGE@U.WASHINGTON.EDU You can get general information about it by sending the message HELP Bob: Thanks for the info, but I have one question. By 'send the command XXX' what exactly do you mean??? Should this be the text of an email message?? or the subject???? Are the commands case-sensitive??? Anything else I should know if I don't even know the above????? DL: Commands should be sent as the TEXT of an email message (the subject is ignored - except in so far as Judge's reply will use the same subject in order to help you keep your mail straight...) Nothing is case-sensative. Ask for the help file and I think you will be enlightened.... (2) Conversation with Alejandro Riverso AR: I have just reached the diplomacy adjudicator. It is a big advance with respect to the system used three years ago. In the list of files there are one called uudip.tar Do you know if this is a unix version of the adjudicator? is it Public domain (or could be speaking with Ken...). DL: Yes, it is the C program that runs the adjudicator. It is copyright Ken Lowe, but he seems to be letting people make fair use of it. AR: If it is a standard C/unix program, I'd like to put it at my local node (we have here a lot of people with no access to email). When does Ken go back? Alejandro Rivero, Zargoza univ, Spain. DL: He's back now. PS: YOur old DIPL list is still declared on bitnet. Have you thought of cancel it? PS2: Is the judge the only email playzone actually in the internet? DL: The JUDGE is the only automated diplomacy adjudicator on Internet, but of course there are many GM's that prefer to run their games by hand. **** INFORMATION ABOUT THE JUDGE **** The JUDGE is always growing and can handle more and more variants. Here are the ones we have so far: Youngstown: A fairly common variant including Asia. Loeb9: Danny Loeb's 9 player variant including Spain and Norway. Pure: Each power starts with one army on a map of seven provinces. Chaos: A 34 player variant in which each player gets one center. Britain: England starts with six armies. 1898: Each player starts with only one of his home centers. Crowded: Eleven players occupy all 35 centers at game start. In addition the following variants can be combined with others: Gunboat: The identities of the other players are kept secret. Press Variants: whether grey press or faked press or ... is allowed or not For more info on these variants send in the command GET INFO.<name-of-variant> except for info on all the Press options, where the command should be GET PRESS To get general information about the judge, send the message GET INFO To get a copy of the house rules used in EP affiliated games, send the message: GET EP.HOUSE.RULES For more information about the Judge, contact me or its author Ken Lowe (jdr@u.washington.edu). **** CORRECTIONS BY KEN LOWE ***** For some reason I don't seem to be on your "Chapter Two" distribution list, at least I didn't see your last issue. Feel free to add me. In the copy that you sent to "UOG11223@VM.UoGuelph.CA" with a CC to me I note the following discrepancies: 1) The Crowded variant has 11 players, not 10. Original 7 plus Balkan, Lowlands, Norway and Spain. 2) It probably doesn't matter much, but your key: Key: F=fall, S=spring, M=movement, R=retreat, B=build leaves off U=summer which occurs in the Machiavelli variants. 3) Michael J Scholl, nvq@l.cc.purdue.edu, the moderator for Snorri signed off (actually disappeared) some time ago. I have taken over moderation of that game. He was quite active at one point until he went on vacation. When he returned he said he was in the process of moving and couldn't find the time to keep up with Diplomacy. He's actually back as a player in a gunboat game, but seems to be taking a much lower profile. 4) Jonathan Monsarrat, jonmon@cadence.com, is AWOL with all mail being rejected with "Unknown user" type errors. It's been that way for a couple of months now. I have taken over moderation of Dien which is progressing on its own and had been while Jon was the moderator anyway. Was/is he sending reports to you or Eric that I am unaware of? **** LIST OF GAME OPENINGS ***** Portnoy Italy 5/4 Jutland Austria 8/8 Tiberius Russia 7/8 Fontenoy P-Lon, Q-Mar, T-Nap, X-Rom, 1-Smy, 3-StP, 9-War **** LIST OF EP GAMES ON THE DA **** Here is an update on games played on Judge. Each game is represented by a line of data (followed possibly by a line of comments). The games are sorted according the the variant rules which are used. The 1st column gives the name of the game including a "#" if the game is a "private" or "unlisted" game. The 2nd column gives its Electronic Protocol number if available. The 3rd column gives the name of the GM (see list of GMs below). The other columns give updates on this game in chronological order with the most recent entry on the right. The updates for a game in formation indicate the number of players needed to start. For example, -5. The updates for a game in progress indicate the season (F for Fall or S for Spring), the last 2 digits of the year, and the phase (M for movement, B for builds, and R for retreats). All this is possibly followed by the indication of the number of replacement players (-1), temporary replacements (T1) needed, or needed later on (*1). I'm listing the status of each game not only for this week but for the last several weeks, so that you can see not only where the game is, but how fast it is moving. Please tell me if this extra information is useful to you. For more recent information send "LIST" to the JUDGE. If you have any additional comments about any games listed here, send them to me.
