It depends on what sort of game you want to play. If you are going to emphasize influence, race makes a big difference: The game seems to be full of Drakken characters trying vainly to get the time of day from humans and elves. The list of permissible race combinations for your position will give you an indication of how races get along. Most of the nonplayer population centers are human. Prestige is also critical: Your diplomatic efforts won't succeed until you've built some up.
