The army continued the assault on the coalition forces this month, Turenne took the army off to fight the dug in Bournonville at Enzheim. The battle was inconclusive at the end, neither Turenne nor le Phew-tous could make much of the superior forces and better positions the enemy possessed. However, that they weren't totally devastated is a miracle from Turenne's and le Phew-tous' military ability, though some say that le Phew-tous relies heavily upon his adjutant d'Aboger for all his command decisions. The frontier regiments swiftly dug themselves in and prepared for their usual routine combat, though this time reinforced by two regular regiments - the King's Musketeers and the Picardy Musketeers. The King's, under the command of Col. B'Stard showed that it could perform the routine duties of combatting heavily defended troops as well as its more usual reckless assaults. Col. B'Stard was mentioned only once though he was his usual brave and modest self - and ever eager to compliment others when he sees fit - his reasons for joining the war effort was not personal glory, but to serve under the "brave and heroic leader of the 1st Div. Pepe le Phew-tous!", unfortunately the Field Marshall wouldn't let him so he had to slum it with the frontier regiments. The casualties in the King's Musketeers were very low, more due to the routine, safe duties than any command tactic on B'Stard's part though. The Picardies also suffered little, though slightly more than the King's. Cap. du Gifford, remarkably silent during the battles, was wounded but went otherwise unnoticed, as did most of the rest of the regiment, even Col. d'Avignon was nowhere near the observers. There was only one individual volunteer in the frontier regiment. Cap. le Gaucher from the ALC decided he needed to fight a little to get back into the swing of society after his long summer holiday. In Cmdr le Phew-tous' division, things were slightly better. His regiments managed several times to break through the enemy fortifications but had to retreat each time. Cmdr le Phew-tous was mentioned twice, he even received the Croix de Guerre for his outstanding personal bravery at a time when most other general staff officers were sipping brandy in camp. Pepe's adjutant, Lt.Col d'Aboga was mentioned twice as he followed his leader into battle. The 4th infantry brigade did its bit, the gascon regiment held itself steady which was better than the 69th Arquebusiers' effort - they were scattered several times and only managed to regroup after their breach was sealed by other regiments. The regiment took heavy losses including its colonel. The 3rd infantry brigade performed a little worse, the 4th arquebusiers managed to lose ground for a while but with a little help regained it later, suffering heavy losses in the process. Brigadier d'Armaund though took his regiments in hand as he personally led them into battle. He was mentioned twice as he was instrumental in what successes the french had. Another title looks certain for this man. He was let down somewhat by the regimental commands though. The 13th Fusiliers only succeeded in covering half the ground of the 53rd, losing their colonel also didn't help matters. And lastly the RNHB performed stoically against heavy forces, but they held on and gave as good as they got. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In Paris, October 1674. The streets of Paris were mostly empty this month as quite a lot of eminent Parisians were either away fighting, or asleep. Those that were awake were able to take advantage of the free drink a wedding provides, and most did. Jean le Furet held his stag night in the first week and several people went. All enjoyed the free drink, even the large burly (even hairy) nurse that appeared halfway through the party to make sure Jean got thoroughly plastered - in plaster of Paris that is. He had to be wheeled to the church in a merchant's cart and had great difficulty kissing the bride at the end of the ceremony. Apart from this little problem the wedding went smoothly, the happy couple were presented with all manner of gifts, Pepe gave a very large sapphire garter to Florence which must have cost him a fortune even though his military duties kept him away. Adjuste gave a basket of pineapples (very rare ot this time of year don't you know). Etienne brought some flowers and Jean-Paul, Mathieu and Ovalle all looked sheepish and empty-handed. Afterwards Jean had his possessions moved to a Palace in the Isle whilst he visited the hospital. Meanwhile a few gentlemen declined Jean's offer of free booze. Loinof Bief and Filliet Mignon spent two weeks closeted together in a corner of Hunters, only emerging for Filliet to fight Adjuste. Filliet arrived at the field with an armful of flowers for someone which he carefully placed with his second, Loinof. The duel commenced, Adjuste, even though totally outclassed by Filliet's skill with a weapon still managed to make himself felt. At the end both duellists were a single blow away from surrender but Filliet was lucky as Adjuste missed his strike, giving Filliet the opportunity to hit Adjuste who promptly surrendered. Filliet immediately took the flowers round to Nicole's who was only slightly upset that only one of the duels over her should have been fought, but she commended Filliet's bravery and his confidence of success and let him in. Jean d'Arme de Lieu and Ganelon Maussadin also didn't turn up to the parties, Jean spent some time with Sarah in an empty Bothwells, whilst Ganelon took Melissa to Blue Gables. Both then moved house, Jean to La Chapelle, Ganelon to La Villette, then Jean disappeared into his barracks and Ganelon disappeared into the military academy where he met Ronaid r'Egain who spent the entire month secluded away. The rest of the month passed quietly, only Adjuste continued to carouse, spending his time alone in Bothwells after Jacqueline threw him out for trying to court Nicole. Several matters of note occurred: Roger d'Aboger was let out of the Bastille with an apology from the Parisian Governor - apparently the CoPS crackdown on debtors was taken a little too far and inevitably in such a wide and complex operation (too complex for some), Roger was wrongly imprisoned. Freed, he scurried off to help his Commanding Officer win the war. Whilst Pierre was at the front, his wife Jane gave birth to a son. It looked like no-one in particular. A howling was heard in the hills north of the Isle, the source of this is not known... Also the theatre put on a play of subtle wit all about the war so far and the part played by the general staff. This didn't go down too well with those soldiers who had travelled all the way to Paris to see it - Pepe was most embarrassed to see a caricature of himself portrayed as a bumbling fool who totally relied upon his aide and adjutant for every minor decision. Louis d'Armaund, too engrossed in Angelique to pay much attention to the play wasn't too happy to find out later that he also was caricatured in the play - apparently as a fawning lackey to his divisional commander. Jean-Luis d'Avignon was also present but fortunately the play's producers evidently didn't consider him important enough to be shown. About the only person who enjoyed the show was Captain Jean-Paul l'Aemmorhoid who went to see it after all the fuss had died down and so could appreciate its finer points (and he could laugh at the sendup of his commanding officers). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Debts due next month: Fabre d'eglantine - 460 (overdue) Olli le Twist - 500 (overdue) Parkway du Gifford - 400 (overdue) Russ d'Codpiece - 300 (overdue) Zakary Napoleon-Brie - 500 (overdue) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Duels: Filliet Mignon v Adjuste d'Anneaux : Filliet wins. Filliet Mignon v Mathieu d'Averril : Both lose (draw). Mathieu d'Averril v Adjuste d'Anneaux : Not fought. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Appointments: The following are open; applications via La Spurt. Troopers to the Kings & Cardinal's Escorts. Divisional Commander to put down the rebels. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Rebellion! The rebellion raging in Le Sud grew in both strength and morale this month after a pathetic attempt at subdual by the military governor of the province. His personal prowess in battle was exemplary though, he received two mentions and rumour has it that he may receive a title because of this - assumming he can live down the humiliation of being relieved of his command by the King. A new commander is now required to pull the 3 regiments fighting the rebels into an effective fighting force. The minister of War, when asked who his favourite was for this post, replied that he would consider any applicant, Commander le Phew-tous included even though he is currently fighting the coalition. A successful commander would automatically be entitled to the post of military governor of le Sud. The fighting during the month varied between the cavalry and the infantry regiments. The QOC, now at the forefront of most attacks, still didn't manage to fully rout the peasants as they scattered away from the soldiers. The Cardinals Guard performed much better than last month though. Their colonel overcame the problems of attacking skirmishing peasants to achieve reasonable results, lets hope he can continue this trend and make the Guard a fearsome force. The 27th Musketeers performed as badly as they did last month. The new recruits still havn't become suited to fighting peasants as they let the rebels run rings around them. The only casualties came from this regiment, 2 captains were killed as they led their troops into ambushes and this has affected the morale of the entire regiment. I feel new blood is necessary for this regiment to pick up its old reputation as the most foolhardy and effective French unit that it held during the time Pierre B'Stard was it's commander. There were several cases of individual bravery. Even though this didn't help the overall results, it no doubt helped keep it from becoming worse. Col. Teefied, popular as ever with the ministry's observers was mentioned twice in the official dispatches. We think he is assured to be elevated to the status of a count in December, not only because of the mentions but because of the way he held the governmental forces together in the faces of low morale and determined enemies. Lt.Col McPicard, regardless of what other papers say about his nationality and commitment to the French army, received one mention during the battle - no doubt due to the excellent leadership which kept his battalion totally devoid of casualties. In the Cardinal's Guard, Cap. du Omy was also mentioned, this because of his outstanding bravery in heavy hand to hand fighting though severely outnumbered. Several other individuals in the Guard were mentioned, but very few of the QOC. Perhaps this is because Teefied outshines them all or perhaps no-one else in the regiment has the qualities necessary to be noticed. The 27th though managed to have all of its members noticed one way or another - every single soldier was mentioned and the dispatches read like the 27th's roll-call. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: I have become a lot stricter with NMRs this turn. If you have just missed this turn, for whatever reason, you need not worry as your character has only lost any sp he would have gaind from your actions. However, if you miss the next turn, you will start to lose SL. Anyone who lost a SL this turn by NMRing will lose 3 SL next turn and from all future turns until I hear from them or they drop below SL 1. I do need orders from you, even if you are locked up in prison, or at fighting at the front - I need to know who is still playing and who isn't. As email is free & easy I don't think I'm asking too much. Please put ORDERS in the subject line as it makes life easier for me - I apologise to Chad Foor for losing his orders last turn, but if he had given a subject this wouldn't have happened. The new rules will be out very soon. They will be in the form of amendments to the official rulebook, copyright of which is owned by SFCP. I believe their standard rulebook is available for about 8 pounds sterling. I'll pass their address to anyone who wants it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Deadline: Friday, 8th November 1991. Up
