Turenne left Enzeim to the coalition this month to continue the march towards Strasbourg. After cunningly placing all the fortresses in Middle Alsace in a state of readiness, the army was split into small groups and sent to secretly march south behind Vosges. Perhaps this is why some of the skirmishes were so bad, without Turenne to guide them, the commanders had to rely upon their own initiative. Lt.Gen le Phew-tous didn't do so badly, he sent his troops out in the right direction, with the right orders but still his brigadiers couldn't handle the separated army. The 4th brigadier sent his troops out almost at random, but fortunately the individual commanders realised what they had to do and kept their battalions together, however, Lt.Col Napoleon-Brie didn't quite manage the secrecy part of his orders, after leading his regiment directly into an enemy unit. His majors did stand the enemy off successfully but Lt.Col Brie was killed. The third brigade did better, only the Lt.Col of the 4th Arquebusiers got slightly lost but was mentioned after he told observers he was waylaid by the enemy. Brigadier d'Armaund showed off his map skills but his regiments were unable to keep up with him, the 53rd arrived slightly late, but the 13th stumbled into the enemy and was decimated. Only the Lt.Col and a handful of men escaped. Brigadier d'Armaund was seen and promoted for his ability. The RNH didn't have any trouble, Maj. Mignon was mentioned twice. The frontier regiments also knew what to do, even though they met some trouble. Lt.Col. de Lieu was mentioned but unfortunately was wounded during a skirmish. Maj. le Gaucher and Brig. de Fleurvilles were both mentioned twice for their prowess. In Alsace, a few regiments were placed to defend the forts against the coalition as they grouped for battle. The PM, under Col. d'Avignon performed bravely, Col. d'Avignon was mentioned twice, perhaps because of the small party he threw for the observer corps. However no-one else in his regiment was noticed, perhaps because of a certain small party that was thrown for the observer corps... The Guards Brigade, under Brig. d'Anneaux was also posted on defence. D'Anneaux was also let down by his regiments, even though his orders were accurate and well thought out, both Col. B'stard and Col le Twist could only maintain a standoff with the enemy. The KM, only made one slip, one of the majors mistimed a sorty and had his battalion scattered as they routed back to safety. The RFG did better, but not greatly so. Col. le Twist was killed by a lucky shot but that was all of note that occurred in the regiment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Paris, November 1674. The month started well with several arrivals in Paris. (obviously attracted by a certain great paper - modesty doesn't stop me from telling you it was this one though) Of these newcomers, Jacques d'Jous and Roland de la Chanson immediately joined the military, Roland had wisely received the express permission of Col. Teefied to join the QOC, and only stopping to choose a suitable horse, popped straight off to Le Sud. Jacques on the other hand had to undergo to rigourous entry requirements of the PM, as Col. d'Avignon was not on hand at the recruiting HQ. Unfortunately, Jacques wasn't allowed to join so, undeterred he went to the PLD HQ where he was immediately accepted. The third newcomer was Jacques Dousound. This notable obviously has his priorities in order for he join Red Phillips and ordered several large drinks to keep him going after his carriage journey. Of regular Parisians, Adjuste decided that things weren't exciting enough for his troops, and a bit of exercise was in order, so he took the entire brigade to the front (well, the RFG as the other two regiments were already there). Ganelon Maussadin and Filliet Mignon also decided they needed the exercise and so both volunteered. The first weekend saw most of the enlisted troops back in Paris for the continuation of last months play. Jean le Furet, Mathieu d'Averril and Louis d'Armaund bought their boxes and were most dismayed to see that it carried on as before, Louis was seen later explaining something to the theatre manager (probably wanted to see 'Emmanuelle meets some *nice* boys'). Jean was so annoyed that he dismissed both majors in the ALC after he saw them both in the front row. On a happy coincidence though, both Jacques le Gaucher and Jean Paul l'Aemmorhoid happened by their barracks and, noticing the empty ranks, applied to Jean le Furet for them claiming to have hated the play, and they were only laughing at the actors' incompetence. On other military matters, the imprisoned Fabre d'Eglantine resigned his commission in the DG, handing control of the regiment over to the brigadier. Russ d'Codpiece languished a little while longer and Michel des Champs visited his local church. At the shylocks were Ganelon, who paid off a debt even though he doesn't have a loan. Henri c'est la Vie also paid off a loan he doesn't have, but Ovalle de Gaulle did a more normal action, borrowing a modest amount. During the week Jacques Dousound was again washing the dust from his throat at Red Phillips, Michel des Champs bought some very expensive gifts and gave them to Jacqueline who suddenly got over her last lover's callous treatment of her. Meanwhile Louis de Fleurvilles rented a palace in the Isle and Jean Paul l'Aemmorhoid rented a modest house in Charonne. At the Bastille, dubious goings on were seen. Fabre received a gift of a rather large oblong cake, and later that night a guard passing Fabre's cell noticed a lot of crumbs on the floor and a rather fatter Fabre stuck in the cell window. As the guard pulled Fabre out, he was struck over the head and when he awoke Fabre was gone leaving only a sticky raspberry-jam covered file to show what had occurred. Meanwhile, other criminal elements of Paris crawled out of the woodwork. The maggots happened upon Mathieu d'Averril's house and left the following note: "Funds for the revolution! Cheers for leaving the door open, Had the wife, Had the dog, Ok, I had both your dogs, But didn't like the one with the skirt on. THE BLACK PIMPERNEL HA HA HA." All anyone could get out of Emmanuelle was that a masked bandit, dressed in red had walked in, grabbed the silverware and walked out again, fortunately only Mathieu's property was taken. Later on the Police were told of a masked man dragging a clinking mattress into a dark alley. The most notable event of the next weekend was that the massed crowds including Jean Paul l'Aemmorhoid, sitting in his box, at the theatre were told that the play had been suddenly cancelled and was being replaced with 'Jardin Heure'. Suffice it to say that those who stayed did so only because they fell asleep. Mysteriously enough, there was some commotion by the Seine where a troup of players were seen having a swim. Nevertheless, some people found better things to do than watch plays, Michel des Champs and Etienne Rouge-Barbe went to church, Mathieu d'Averril tried unsuccessfully to acquire the military governor post, however, Louis de Fleurvilles did acquire a very newly vacated brigadier post, resigning his job as Commissioner of Public Safety, and volunteered for duty. The second week was rather quiet, most gentlemen left in Paris were secluded away practising military weapons (getting back in practise after they realised people were challenging one another!) or learning from their mistakes in the military academy. Two people were out and about, Jacques Dousound took a modest bunch of flowers to the fair (and young) Catherina. She was very flattered at being courted but after explaining about the unfortunate Fabre, and the late Maurice Anton Devereaux, and how she was finding money hard to come by, Jacques had promised to look after her. Meanwhile Ovalle was spending quite a bit of time in the park near Melissa's apartment, feeding the ducks and chatting to Melissa as she came and went (almost certainly about who kept placing flowers on her doorstep). The third weekend, and Jacques Dousound went to the theatre, having been told the play was very good, and managed to enjoy himself! (No doubt a keen gardener, or a fan of the dancing girls' routine before the main performance). Jean-Paul and Michel des Champs went to church. It was about at this time that the first rumblings of unrest were heard, small bands of peasants and ruffians went about during the night 'disturbing' things. The Police were unable to do much about this, but the CoPS office was informed as to the identity of the ringleader - none other than Louis de Fleurvilles (fortunately for him he was firmly entrenched at the front), but a warrant for his arrest has been issued. During the daytime, people still managed to socialise. Henri c'est la Vie took Michelle to Hunters where he did a spot of gambling, Ovalle de Gaulle took Caroline to Blue Gables, obviously fed up with parks and Melissa, and Jacques Dousound enlisted in the PLD. The ruffians became slightly more organised much to the dismay of the authorities and started to do some serious damage around Passy. The fourth weekend and Michel des Champs was again at church, Henri c'est la Vie also went there (to pray the rioters wouldn't ransack his house perhaps). Everyone else stayed firmly locked away behind closed doors, not even venturing out except those who chose to stay at their barracks to practise, and those at the academy. Only Jacques d'Jous was brave (foolish) enough to venture out, in the interest of seeing what was going on, he visited a bawdyhouse right in the middle of Passy, right next to where some rioting took place the previous night. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Debts due next month: none! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Duels: Adjuste d'Anneaux v Mathieu d'Averril : not fought (no sp losses) Pepe le Phew-tous v Ronaid r'Egain : Ronaid has cause Pepe le Phew-tous v Ovalle de Gaulle : Ovalle has cause Pierre B'Stard v Rovier du Omy : Rovier has cause JLF, JLG, JPA all may challenge Pepe le Phew-Tous. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Appointments: Louis de Fleurvilles has resigned as Commissioner of Public Safety and has gained the post of Brigadier of the Horse Guards Brigade. The following are open; applications via La Spurt. Minister without Portfolio. Brigadier of the 2nd Brigade of Foot. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Rebellion! The rebellion has finally been quashed. The new military governor, a strong leader and tactician pulled the regiments into shape and set them their tasks. He quickly found the weak points in the rebels' feeble strategies and ordered decisive action. Unfortunately the regiments weren't quite up to his expectations and failed him quite spectacularly, only the Cardinal's Guard managed to get reasonable results which made certain of the final crushing of the rebel forces. The CG didn't really perform well, but against the opposition luckily proved adequate. The colonel, Lt.Colonel were both promoted, but no-one in the guard was mentioned. One captain did get killed though, but he was only one of few casualties. The 27th Musketeers performed even worse than last month, evidently undermanned and suffering from terrible morale, the regiment saw a major and the last captain killed. None of the officers could manage to hold his few troops together and the entire regiment spent most of the month scattered. Even the QOC, under Col. Teefied didn't perform very well, Teefied relied too heavily on the foot troops and so suffered their fate when they scattered leaving his horsemen in the middle of screaming peasants. Lt.Col McPicard did best of all in the regiment, he held his troop together and drove the peasants running from him. He was mentioned once, as was Teefied, but the most noticed man in the entire battle was the new recruit Cap. de la Chanson. He recklessly spent most of the month directly charging straight into hordes of peasants, hacking and slashing before charging out again. Once his horse was speared, he nearly got killed but a private pulled him out of the crowd and out to safety. Cap de la Chanson was mentioned twice, and awarded the Croix de Guerre. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: Next month the RFG will be going to the front. I hope everyone realises that insults to a member of your friendly regiment, whilst not giving you cause, means you can challenge the insulter to a duel. You don't have to do this though, but it would gain you status, prestige within your own regiment, glory within the friendly regiment, and an increase to your weapon skill. Remember that if you don't fight you will lose 1 SL, and that duels take no time to perform or watch so you can do other things as well. Lastly, one regiment will be needed to crush the rioters next month. Colonels should announce that they wish to do this in La Spurt. Influence can be used to get the job if more than one applies. The following people are invited to Versailles for Christmas.
