However, I don't have orders for Turkey or England in any case, so Magnus and Anand need to get writing please. To everyone else, I do have your orders and you need not despair, the game is still alive, and kicking as well I hope. Michael. Date: Sat, 14 Sep 91 23:31:12 +1200 I am only lacking orders from Anand now, and apparently he is having trouble with his mail, so as soon as this is resolved, we should be able to complete Spring 1903 and proceed, (upwards and onwards to better and brighter things). Michael. Date: Tue, 17 Sep 91 10:12:26 +1200 Well you will all be pleased to know that I have everyone's orders for the Spring 1903 turn of the Brusilov Offensive game. I hope to have processed results out by the end of the week. It is quite a tedious business, but I should have time to do it on Friday or Wednesday morning. Michael. Date: Wed, 2 Oct 91 16:08:39 +1200 Dear all, I just thought that I should apologise for the lack of work I have done for your cause. The game is all ready to be adjudicated, I just haven't been able to put aside the time to do it. I will try and get it done RSN, Michael. Date: Thu, 24 Oct 91 11:40:50 +1300 I've done it folks; the Brusilov Offensive results are ready and waiting to be sent out. I will do this over the next few minutes. I am in the middle of exams at the moment, so I don't want to set a deadline that is too near. However, at the same time, I can appreciate that you will all want to be getting on with the game. Suggestions as to when the deadline should be, gratefully received. Thanks for being so patient, Michael. Date: Thu, 31 Oct 91 18:00:12 +1300 I hope everyone has their results. Could you all confirm that you are still in the game and also suggest a deadline for the next turn as well? Also, if anyone can tell me anything about Andre I would appreciate it; my mail to him hasn't got through the last two times. Michael. Press: Vienna Tribune: =============== TO ALL: I noticed that the first message in my "CULLODEN" email folder is dated Aug. 29, 1990. Happy anniversary! TO ENGLAND AND GERMANY: I would be happy to help negotiate a peace settlement between your nations. While Germany's resistance is impressive, in the long run it serves to increase France's dominance over the game. TO FRANCE: All this unpleasantness over Italy can be avoided if you turn your attention to other areas. TO ITALY: Hang in there, help is on the way. TO RUSSIA AND TURKEY (AND ITALY TOO): The first moves I wrote down were bold and expeditionary: Gre-Ion, Vie-Boh with War's support. Then I considered what a stab could do to me. Not that I considered an attack from either of you very probable ... but if one had occurred, it would have been difficult for me to recover. I think the new moves are reasonable. Tri-Tyr is guaranteed to work. Adr-Ion will probably succeed because France should have counted on four supports into the Ionian, and presumably has found something better to do with his navy. If not, I'll try the same move next Spring. I supported Mos-Liv, just as I said I would in the summer press. ("I need Warsaw for Silesia"? Sorry, must have been on drugs. I have no idea what that was supposed to mean.) I attacked Sev because I wasn't sure what would happen; better safe than sorry. I realize that Turkey won't like Ser-Bul much ... but it's not much of an offensive position. I would like to do a self-standoff with Rum and Gre over Bul -- and I'm sure Turkey would like it too -- but the silliness in Sevastopol prevents it. Haven't we got more important things to do with our armies than butt heads? I think also that the situation in the West is deteriorating rapidly, and that we can afford a turn of less than all-out aggression. I'll get to Boh and Sil soon enough, and I'll rest easier knowing I can trust you guys -- as I'm sure this turn will prove. Look for proposed moves in the Winter press. I promise I'll try to maintain a more constant strategy, though there is something to be said for the bluff. The Times: ========== To Europe -> The Prime Minister dismissed as "unimportant" the imminent landing of German troops in Liverpool. "We will deal with them at our leisure" stated the cigar chewing PM, who was answered with the chorus "Yavold, Prime Minister" by his devoted staff. To France -> Well, I need to dispose of the fleet in my rear. This should occupy my spare fleets for a year or so...I'll try to get armies to the Easter Front ASAP. Since you would appear to be the senior partner (my own fault, and congratulations so far), where to from here? To Russia -> I would say that your prospects are improved. To Germany -> Be seeing you. To Austria -> We are, as always, politely attentive to all Austrian diplomacy. To Italy -> What *are* you doing? La Parisienne: ============== PRESIDENT ORDERS FLEETS NORTH; MANY OFFICIALS QUESTION THIS DECISION (Paris, fall 1906) The President interrupted the naval siege of Italy and ordered fleets to head North to assist the English in ousting the German marauders. "Two things have become very clear," he said. "First, the German marauder is a serious threat to the English homeland. Second, the English have grossly underestimated this threat. I feel that it is the duty of the French, as an ally of the English, to assist them in recitfying this situation. I sincerely hope that the English will trust us in this matter, and will accept our offer of aid." In general, other high ranking officials seemed to agree with this decision, since it appears that the English will only be able to raise one additional unit in the offseason, and no other English units are in a position to respond to the German threat immediately. Other officials questioned the decision, fearing that the English will interpret the moves as a betrayal rather than an offer of assistance. "Only time will tell the answer to that question," the President said. "It is my firm belief that the English will continue to have faith in our alliance." ENGLISH FOREIGN MINISTER APOLOGIZES FOR MISSING SUPPORT (Brest, fall 1906) The English foreign minister returned from London today, after making apologies for the French failure to support the English fleet in Denmark. The support was not ordered because the field commanders felt it was necessary to reposition some of the armies due to the impending Austrian onslaught. The commander-in-chief explained, "We needed to capture Berlin leaving the army in Kiel free to support the English fleet; however, with the threat of Austrian hostilities, this was not possible. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused the English fleet." AUSTRIAN THREAT OF TROUBLE IN GERMANY CAUSES LITTLE CONCERN (Paris, fall 1906) The war department was not particularly concerned by the Austrian threats of impending problems in Germany. "We believe that we have established a solid defensive position in this area, and will not be easily ejected from this area," remarked a top military official. "If the Austrians choose to attack us here, it will be a long, protracted battle, which will serve no useful purpose for either side." TURKISH EXPANSION -- A VERY REAL (AND FRIGHTENING) POSSIBILITY (Paris, fall 1906) There is growing concern over the volatility of the Balkan region. Several experts in this area agree that there is a distinct possibility of immediate, rapid Turkish expansion which could easily double the size of the Turkish military in one year. Diplomats have been sent to the region to gather information, and to convey the French concerns in this matter. "The Austrians and Russians may be placing too much trust in the Sultan," said one expert. "It appears that there are 3-4 centers that the Sultan could occupy with little or no resistance, causing a radical shift in the balance of power of the Balkan areas." Berlin Bugle: ============= G-World: Hi Ho Hi Ho, it's off to war we go. I'm getting crushed and loving it to death. Hi Ho Hi Ho! G-E: Unless you come stop me, I will take London or Edinburgh next! :-) G-F: Wanna cut a deal? You're in a real good bargaining position right now! G-A: Well, I screwed this game up enough for Germany. I only hope that I have provided enough chaos for my fellow Germanics to prosper! I would much prefer if you would be the final owner of Germany as opposed to the FROGS!!! A-Everyone else: Good luck! Roman Herald: ============= To Austria: I can help with Tri - Tyr but I need Nap as I have no way of knowing if the croissant copulator will harrass Naples or Rome. If he moves his fleet south from Piedmont to Tuscany I shall need Venice as well. I suggest that you and Turkey come to a mutual conclusion on the matter of Greece to free your fleets. To Turkey: You're just bashing heads with Austria while France slowly expands towards you. Either come to an agreement over the Balkan states or be prepared to face France dirtectly. To everyone else: I am still lost for words. Moscow Gazette: =============== To Austria: I hope that you moved to bounce in Sev. I have followed the other plan. If all has gone well, you can move Rum in the Spring, and I will go for Stp. If Turkey is in Sev, we use that Army to kill Stp. Remember, that in the end, I am the only one who can build northern fleets. To Turkey: I asked for a bounce + I hope that you did it. If you are in Sev, I will disband Mos ( If I'm in Lvn ) and support Sev - Mos. After that will you support Lvn - Stp. You gain moscow too, but I would then like it back so that I can build a northern fleet. Ankara Bulletin: ================ To all - No real press this time.
