Kempes (0:0 0 0) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ BFC: CFC: CHW: Following a disastrous session in which the Howling Wind managed but a single point, the manager scheduled several sessions with local Chicago athletes to provide encouragement for the squad. First off, Ernie Banks, former player from the Chicago Cubs and member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, was invited, but the team management realized that a representative from a team who has not won a championship since 1908 would not be most appropriate. Next, Michael Jordan, of the NBA Champion Chicago Bulls, was invited, but since he is in the middle of his season he was not available for anything less than his usual appearance fee; but the team management realized that it was inconsistent to spend funds on Mr. Jordan when it was unwilling to provide funds for promoting home games. Finally, the management called former Chicago Sting star Karl Heinz Granitza, who had led the city's previous (soccer) football club to an NASL championship. After several attempts to reach Mr. Granitza (who had left Chicago recently following the bankruptcy of several businesses with which he had been affiliated), the squad heard a rousing talk from an undisclosed location in Germany. Mr. Granitza told the players of the numerous opportunities available to former members of championship team, including managing restaurants and other enterprises. Following the talk the management announced plans for player of the session promotions; when a player enjoys a good session he will receive a nickname. "Iron" M. Tyson was the star performer in Session A, with two assists. "Colonel" A. Sanders, who scored in the final 1-1 tie is the star of Session B. All other nicknames will be assigned as performance indicates. DRM: FP: Phonons Continue Winning Ways ----------------------------- After a loss to the Woodley Wanderers, the Flying Phonons came back with a victory over the top of the table Grecian Urn Neophytes, and followed that with their first road victory of the season against the Valencia Lean Machine. They now stand second in the Western Division with 4 wins and 2 losses. Their next match is against Brauhaus FC, a curious club which was simply dreadful in its first three fixtures but came on like a house on fire in its last three. We spoke to Phonons' striker Robert Dirac about this match. "Brauhaus FC are actually quite a good side when they're not drunk. Their manager obviously got something straight with the players after their third fixture." When questioned about the rumoured new strategy of Brauhaus FC, of sending beer to their opposition in the hope that the opposition would turn up drunk or hung over, Dirac replied, "Yes, they did send us beer. However, we are going to save it for our post game victory celebration. The only conceivable difficulty we could have with this fixture is if Brauhaus FC moves again and we turn up at the wrong pitch." GUN: [GUN] Coach Andreas Parmitheus was very disappointed at the Grecian Urn Neophytes home performance against the X-Men, where the X-Men hung on for a nil-nil tie. "I don't know why we still lead the division. It seems all the teams are very equal. I've improved the home incentive to try and escape this session with a pair of wins." When questioned on what this new incentive could be, Coach Parmitheus was very vague, only letting slip something about whipped cream, chocolate syrup, scotch tape, leather underwear and a party at the Temple of Zeus down below the Acropolis after the games. Star forward Judge Dread is adopting well to the laid-back, relaxed pace of Greece. "Yeah, I've been getting a suntan and generally calming down since I got here. I was always very uptight dealing with criminals; it's good to take it easy every once in awhile." Indeed, except for one altercation near Syntagma Square, where Dread began shooting at all the honking cars [note: every car honks incensantly in Athens], his temperment seems much improved since he joined the team. In other news, the team bus almost drove off a cliff when a small furry rodent scurried across the road in front of them. Investigations showed the creature to be a lemming, mysteriously non-native to this area. Coach Parmitheus was quoted as saying, "I don't know why, but lemmings give me the creeps! I'm getting some expert exterminators from Inuvik, Canada to deal with the problem. I don't want any of these vermin showing up in the clubhouse!" MCC: Unhappily I must report that the Campbell Clansmen have shut their training grounds to the press. The management will make no statement on the policy other than to say rather generally that "the coaches want no distractions" during training. I have, however, found out by carefull observation that there are two new players showing up for workouts. Best guess is that these two are from the older group of the club's amateur prospects, judging by appearance, that would fit in the leagues age III category. One of the two is somewhat slight but seems very springy and lithe looking by the way he walks. Haven't found his name yet. I'll try to come up with that for my next report. The other looks to be a very dangerous addition to the first side given proper attention and coaching. He's a large, strapping lad of about 6 and a half feet in height. Same height as Tiny McBane, the rookie GK, but looks to weigh about 50-60 pounds more than Tiny. No idea at this point what position the coaches have assigned him to but I'd say he'd make a decent threat in the air in front of opponents' goal keepers. That's all I can report for now. Perhaps the training grounds will open to the press again if Clansmen do better in the upcomming session - they're still seeking their first win of the regular season. Disappointing after such a sterling performance in the Marsupial Festival earlier this year. OBG: [F. "Ace" Lift, Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood CA] "Talk about a bunch of Hot & Cold actors. You people either win them all or lose them all." was the quote that this reporter took away from one of the team meetings this week. The coach then got into a miming argument with Chaplin after his second red card in as many weeks. This forced coach Eacker to bench him for this session. As far as the session that he was getting into, the coach had a sense that at least two of the teams that he would be facing in this session were known for screaming on the field. The Clansmen by definition are a little touched, this is due to some of the practices that he has heard about where they will get out to practice dressed in only kilts. At least that is the story that this reporter has heard. Though he hasn't found anyone willing to come forward and verify that the kilts weren't covering any other piece of clothing ... And the Windy City team, tends to have to howl just to keep themselves warm. Especially when you consider where their practice field is on the banks of Lake Eerie. Those guys tend to show up at any match with their hair blown all over the place. It is such a permanent problem that even if you shellaced them, the hair would still be mussed up. VLM: None WW: WW anounces that in the new year they will be employing a press secretary to make up for the lack of news coming from this organisation.
