The frontier division, now under the command of Lt.Gen d'Armaund swept into Turkheim vigourously where it gave battle to a large allied force. Lt.Gen d'Armaund was acting a little foolhardily perhaps given that he was new to commanding such a large force, but after a brief fight, the allied force retreated across the Rhine - mostly due to d'Armaund's inspired and brilliant leadership qualities. He was noticed and had his rank confirmed, however, one unlucky fluke marred the French victory - as Louis was riding along after the battle, whistling happily and stopping occasionally to spit upon the enemy dead, one of them who was not as dead as he should have been, recognised the commander, jumped up and speared him with his bayonet. The dutch soldier was immediately killed but Louis had to be rushed to hospital where he now is recovering. The regiments carrying out Lt.Gen d'Armaund's battle plans didn't live up to expectation. The RNH and frontier regiments had to struggle to effect the victory and the RFG even managed to get pushed back several times. Its commander was promoted to colonel though, perhaps in the hope that new officers would make a difference. Everybody in the RFG was mentioned however, and both Sub. du Montblanc and Pvt. d'Oe were promoted. Maj. Chandon however, bravely leading his battalion in was killed by a stray shot though. The volunteers in the frontier regiment were not in the eyes of the observers however, even though several of them performed many brave deeds that mostly went unnoticed. Those that were fortunate to be seen included Maj. le Gaucher who was promoted to bvt Lt.Col. The others were only seen as they died, Sub. d'Jous was killed as was Maj.s Bief and Mignon. These last two were continually at the front of all the fighting, charging in without a thought for personal safety - and so died heroes deaths. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Paris, January 1675. The first month of 1675 saw Louis' trial. The courthouse was packed out, and several of Paris most noteworthy citizens appeared to give witness. Pepe le Phew-tous said "I believe "The Snake" to be neither a small pink gin or a large fried egg as I may have suggested" but when pressed by the prosecution counsel added "however, on the issue of this trial m'lords nothing is being done, nothing is being done. Off with his head!". Pepe obviously insisting that Louis be made an example of to help prevent future riots. Louis de Fleurvilles gave his own innocent plea, and Jean d'Arme de Lieu called Louis " a gentleman" and through some testimony about Teefied, the cavalry and hearsay evidence got to the point and said "ee 'ad nothing to do wiz zee riots and az gentlemen we should believe eem in the face of no real evidence except zee gossip". Mathieu d'Averril gave the court similar witness, as did Hugh Jorgan who added that de Fleurvilles name was "synonymous with valour, glory and of the virtues of France". Roland de la Chanson thought otherwise, telling the court that Louis was a "pockfaced syphilitic sewer rat, without whom Paris would be much safer. And happier. And better". Pierre B'Stard showed up and gave his usual brief testimony - "he's guilty as hell m'lord", as did Aramastus Devorak (likewise "guilty"). Folleau le Ledere said that de Fleurvilles "has a wonderful character, loves his mother, is kind to dogs and children and comes to church regularly. How anyone could think that he could possibly be guilty of the heinous charges against him is incredible.". Roger d'Aboger hurriedly arrived late but insisted Louis was guilty, and Henri c'est la Vie appeared with reams of letters and correspondance as evidence which could not throw the verdict one way or the other. In the end, and after much consideration the verdict was given: Louis de Fleurvilles was guilty of starting the riot and seeking to undermine the authority of King Louis XIV of France. As a traitor he was taken to the Bastille to await his execution whereupon Jean d'Arme was heard to say that Louis was a "no good pig-dog" who had duped him into giving his favourable testimony. Those who didn't go to the trial mostly spent their time on military matters. Anton l'Aardvark joined the Gascon (!) regiment as a captain, Nes d'Cafe joined the GMD as a major. and Guilliame le Magne was again turned away from the RFG. Jean le Furet decided that a minister should not get involved with messy business like riots and traitors so took himself off to Bothwells. Ugolin St Martin immediately upon arrival in Paris showered Christine with gifts and charm to good effect. During the weekend Henri c'est la Vie and Aramastus Devorak dumped into each other at the Cemetaire des Saintes-Inoccentes and fought their duel. Henri drew first blood but immediately surrendered when Aramastus delivered a mighty cut with his sabre. The second weekend saw the usual rush to the church and theatre, but during the night the following appeared a wall near to the message of last month: "Le Black Pimpernel must 'umbly apologize for 'is attack upon ze ancestry of Pierre Le B'Stard's alleged son. M. Le B'Stard is still countable among ze gentlemen of Paree, and would brook no creature under 'is roof spawned by zat arriviste Phewtous. Of course all ze true gentlemen de Paree are at ze front, leaving only ze cowards et ze pig-dogs to root like swine before ze pitying gaze of ze dames bell Paree Le Black Pimpernel" The second week and two stag parties were held. Pepe le Phew-tous booked the west function room of Bothwells, and Roger d'Aboger booked the East. Etienne Rouge-Barbe, Pierre B'Stard, Ugolin St Martin, Nes d'Cafe, Ronaid r'Egain and Jean-Luis d'Avignon turned up to get Pepe drunk while no-one turned up to Roger's. Pepe faked getting drunk so that when the barber turned up with his shaving equipment, Pepe immediately sprang up and ran into the night to avoid whatever humiliation he was about to receive. (Roger of course, simply got blotted) Jean d'Arme de Lieu went a-courting Louisa who was happy at the attention. However, Aramastus and Guilliame le Magne both tried courting Deborah at the same time and of course, Aramastus has gotten into another duel over this lady. Michel des Champs went to Bothwells and disappeared into a back room with a few DG officers. The third weekend and Pepe and Elizabeth got married, as did Roger and Anne-Marie. Pepe received few wedding gifts (a pair of silk him and hers handerchiefs from Etienne and a set of carved wooden soldiers painted in the Picardy livery). Both ceremonies went smoothly, Pepe's due to the well-rehearsed drill of Jean-Luis' honour guard of Picardy soldiers. Afterwards Pierre B'Stard went to bothwells as did Jean d'Arme de lieu. Michel des Champs tried to woo Nicole and Nes D'Cafe tried with Juliette, both unsucessfully. Ugolin St Martin joined the Royal Marines and bought a vacant captaincy. Everyone else either practised weaponry or military skill. The fourth week and Pierre B'Stard was again at bothwells, this time with Michel des Champs and Jean le Furet. Ronaid r'Egain took himself off to Mme. Miggins', Etienne took Charlene to the Frog and Peach and Folleau le Ledere forsook church duties for a few drinks at Red Phillips. Roger d'Aboger joined the Royal Foot Guards, then bought a vacant majority after the old one resigned. For the last few days of January, only three things of note occurred, Guilliame le Magne went fishing in the Seine, and was later seen being rescued from a mob of angry peasants smelling of fish by the local police. And Louis de Fleurvilles managed to casually stroll out of the Bastille, apparently someone forgot to lock his door properly, and the front gates happened to be open at the time, and the guards all seemed to be having their tea-breaks! With such lucky coincidence on his side, Louis 'legged it' to his palace for a few essentials and then rode off to the front. The final thing - Pepe was seen (making a song and dance about it actually) handing over a very large sum of money to Folleau le Ledere for 'the church steeple repair fund'... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A reminder: All the regiments are on Defence ops until further notice. Also, because Lt.Gen d'Armaund is in hospital, an NPC commander will take over temporarily. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Debts due next month: none!
