I hope to have a preliminary version working in a couple of weeks. It will be similar in style to the (completely out of date) list that is presently available from the DIPL-L@MITVMA.BITNET list server. I would essentially release three files regularily. Hall of Fame (list of players, and how they performed in all the games) Completed Games (list of games for which I have extracted results, and those results) Ongoing Games (list of games presently on the judge, and their status) The ongoing games list will probably be finished a bit later than the other two! If anybody has any suggestions please send them to me (nick@sunburn.waterloo.edu) These lists will be available by subscription through me, and perhaps through the listserver at MITVMA, and perhaps by FTP from somewhere. I will be accepting requests for subsciption to any, or all of the lists, starting now. What would the ONGOING GAMES list be like? Obviously redoing the LIST command of JUDGE is pointless, perhaps Nick has in mind an improved version of Section 2 of Chapter 2 of EP. In that case, I invite his help, and would like to publish his files regularly. **** 1898 DISCUSSION **** From: dmb@bigd.cray.com Dave Bowen I won't claim to be an expert on 1898 strategy and I don't know whether I was overly strong in my comment about the importance of getting your supply centers or if you read more in it than I intended. I suspect it was a bit of both. As I noted before, if you want to have four units on the board when 1901 arrives then the first supply center you capture MUST be a home center. As Dave Wiseman noted, what you choose to do in 1900 for the next two centers is less important. You might choose to capture your remaining home center with one unit and go after a convenient neutral center (or even invade your neighbor) with the other. Or you might leave the third home center until 1901 or even later and get the attack underway quickly by grabbing two non-home centers in 1900. Perhaps your openings library should look at 1898 openings. **** GOOFY PLAY RULE DISCUSSION **** From: Jeff Sullivan <jas@ISI.EDU> I have a question about what exactly consitutes GOOFY PLAY under the EP house rules. I am in a gme where I have been engaged in a bitter Diplomacy battle with a neighbor which has led to some heated PR. While my opponent had held the upper hand until recently, the tables have turned slightly so that now he is in trouble. He has therefore declared that anyone else but me can take his spaces; he'll move out of them and let them in, as long as it isn't me. This seems while not goofy, to be petty, and to be an inapproipriate way to play the game. However, the one other player in the gunboat game who has commented on my requests if this is appropriate has said it is. Since he stands to benefit from this position, his opinion is somewhat suspect. Can you tell me what the ruling on such is? From: Daniel Loeb Clearly, any sort of "declaration" (goofy or not) is not any sort of "play". Therefore, it can not be classified as illegal. While making stupid moves is frowned upon, THREATENING to make stupid moves and gaining some sort of advantage from such a threat is actually good play and is to be admired. Now, let's assume he goes beyond his threats and hands over some territory. Even this to a small extent could be considered rational play. If I was the GM, I would ask the player to explain his (secret) strategy. If he still has some sort of strategy whose goal is to win, draw, or survive as long as possible, then I would allow the play. However, if he does not admit to having a strategy, or if his strategy is incompatible with the above motives, then he should be told to adopt a legal strategy or be replaced. The GM can start such an investigation on demand by another player, or on his own initiative after seeing what moves the player has submitted. If the moves are deemed goofy, they can be cancelled only if the results have not yet been calculated, since EP rules prohibit recalculating results. From: Jeff Sullivan <jas@ISI.EDU> Also, on a related note, I'd like to know what is the appropriate level of vitriol in Diploming. The other player has termed it abuse and has said that it exceeds the level appropriate to the game, but I don't agree. how can one tell? From: Daniel Loeb I like to allow free speech. But on the other hand there is no rational reason to be abusive. Sending a message like: "I see we can't work together, I guess this means war." is just as affective as one filled with swear words. By the way, I assume that we are talking here about the tone being used. Under no circumstances should a message make non-game threats or insinuations. From: Eric_S_Klien@cup.portal.com The play is not goofy, it is bitter. If the press is too bitter, the GM should edit it. From: Daniel Loeb I think the press in the case was sent directly by the player (possibly via the intermediary or the judge, and possibly not). In either case, the GM has no opportunity to edit it. Each game is represented by a line of data (followed possibly by a line of comments --- please send me comments I can use if you are a GM!). The games are sorted according the the variant rules which are used. The 1st column gives the name of the game including a "#" if the game is a "private" or "unlisted" game. The 2nd column gives its Electronic Protocol number if available. If the game is published in another EP chapter (other than number two), then that is indicated after a slash. The 3rd column gives the name of the GM (see list of GMs below). The other columns give updates on this game in chronological order with the most recent entry on the right. The updates for a game in formation indicate the number of players needed to start. For example, -5. The updates for a game in progress indicate the season (F for Fall or S for Spring), the last 2 digits of the year, and the phase (M for movement, B for builds, and R for retreats). All this is possibly followed by the indication of the number of replacement players (-1), temporary replacements (T1) needed, or needed later on (*1). I'm listing the status of each game not only for this week but for the last several weeks, so that you can see not only where the game is, but how fast it is moving. No big suprise, since the Turkish alliance had been forced to take him out of necessity, yet perhaps regretted it, since Z-Serbia's unique diplomatic style ruined many opportunities for growth. Now, the Turks have a bit of a respite since the people previously attacking them are now being eliminated. We are now down to 9 players. 7-Venice is almost sure to be eliminated in 1909. While X-Rome will probably be kicked out of Greece. This will set the stage for a rapid fall of Italy in 1910. While the 3 main powers S-Munich, B-Belgium, and 3-StPete controlling together 18 supply centers are still working together, all is not quiet on the Northern front. B-Belgium appears not to have REALLY forgiven P-London's treachery a few turns back. In a suprise move, he take London and Liverpool. Chances are London and Liverpool will not be able to hang on long. One final note, the game IONA has just started.
