The army is sometimes stationed in Yorkshire (instead of moving to Edinburgh) partly to guard London in the case of French perfidy. If so, its offensive role is then much more limited. From Edinburgh, it can be convoyed by either fleet. It thus has the choice of going to Norway or to the Continent. It can also be convoyed to Norway by one fleet and support by the other. This openign is viewed as primarily anti-Russian. It can also be anti-German. One powerful Fall move is (A Edi-Nwy, F Nth C F Edi-Nwy, F Nwg-Bar) threatening Russia even more directly." Opening 2: "This is blatantly anti-French. The threat is A Wal-Bre, F Eng C A Wal-Bre. If France moved F Bre-Mid, she is probably faced with the choice of giving up either Spain or Portugal in order to protect Brest. England may also allow her to slip back in the home center while convoying the army to Belgium instead. Meanwhile, F Nth can either support the army into Belgium or take Norway. It is pretty silly for England to pass up the Norwegian center." **** CONTEST **** I have proposed the following contest related to the game opening series. People can propose up to three openings for each country. It is not too late to participate!!! Here are the rules... Some interesting reading, I was surprised to see how fast some things have taken off, like the judge, and EP chapter 2. I was aware that the judge as part of EP was a relatively new concept, but I had not realized it was only a few weeks old when I joined the Diplomacy world last summer. Considering how much the number of games has ballooned on the judge since then, perhaps I am almost an old-timer? Naah! As I said interesting reading, by the way, I stored it all on floppy (local storage is really tight around here, lots of image processing, more than our hard drives can support really), so I guess I am an archive site now :-). So much for the work I was going to do this evening! Re: the next hall of fame, I thought I might add some points, including points for masters! (That should encourage more people to gm, what do you think? As I said earlier, if you have any results information about draws, (like Austerlitz) I would appreciate it, About that youngstown game I am setting up, sunda, it is already up to 8 players! (I am quite surprised myself, only people who are in on weekends have seen the announcement!) **** SUNDA GAME START **** From: nick@sunburn.uwaterloo.ca (Nick Fitzpatrick) I am GMing a Gunboat Youngstown variant Diplomacy game on the judge. (In this version there are three additional countries, Japan, India and China. The Map and starting positions are greatly altered. Identities are a secret, and no press is allowed betweend the players Apart from this the rules are the same). This might be the first moderated Youngstown Gunboat ever, (on the judge), at least is is the first one in a couple of years. The name of the game is timor, so anyone who wants to play should send signon ?sunda password youngstown gunboat to the judge (judge@u.washington.edu) For more information on the youngstown variant, send the command get info.youngstown To get a youngstown map, send the command get youngstown.ps (Its in postscript format) or even better, get it by anonymous FTP to milton.u.washington.edu it is in the public/misc sub-dir The game parameters are similar to the game speed. This is a fast game, and I will not change these parameters once we start, so beware. Moves are on a 24 deadline, with a 72 hour grace, deadlines occurs on Monday afternoons, and Tues-Fri. There is a 30 minute minimum delay before processing move orders, rather than 12 hours, the normal 12 hours is so the judge does not go crazy if everybody has submitted lots of advance (phase) orders, however I have never seen this happen, except perhaps at the end of the game, and I might add a bit of delay, if necessary, later on. The default move processing is 11:20 pm, rather than 11:30 (PST). (GMT-8) This is just to give us a bit of a headstart against all the other games. Against my better judgement, there is no dedication limit on this game. This game will have an EP number, and be listed in Chapter 2. **** I LIKE TO PLAY GERMANY **** (Last of a 3 week series) From Saint George and the Dragon - No. 52 - Page 7 - May 11, 1980 Germany is a planner. To succeed regularly with Geramny one must have a plan of how the game is going to go from the start. This is true to a degree of the other countries, but for Germany it is vital. Germany has a hand in the dispersion of four neutrals in 1901. Den, Hol, Bel, and Swe. Germany can be attacked by every country in 1901 except Turkey. Germany lies astride many of the stalemate lines. The fight over Munich and Berlin often determines whether a game will be won or drawn. So Germany has to be interested in what is happening everywhere for the start. I ahve seen Germanys ally with England and win. I have seen Germanys ally with France and win. I have even seen a Germany do remarkably well by allying with Russia. The plan does not matter in its details --- that is many different plans will work --- but there must be a plan. When playing another country, you can afford to sit back and decide on your next attack when you are done with your first target. But since Germany is so centrally located. Germany cannot wait. There is too great a probability that someone else is making plans to occupy your country. If you ally with France initially, you and he can agree to split Bel and the 3 English centers 50/50. Belgium is better for you to have, since otherwise, you have a unit in Holland, dedicated to no other purpose than keeping France out. So you other center will probably be Edi, and that will probably be the last center to fall. So while you are lookking to take Edi, and considering whether to stick with France or attack him, France is already looking for a new target. And if Russia holds Scandinavia, you could have problems. But wait, you anticipated this. You encouraged Italy and Austria to ally. They have taken out Turkey. Austria is now ready to attack Russia WITH THE HELP YOU PROMISED EARLIER. Italy, with your encouragement is now attacking France. So you are going for a 3-way draw? Not necessarily. If you have been talking properly, both Italy and Austria are willing to stab each other to race you for the win. When they attack each other, they are more likely to carry a grudge against each other. The same is true in allinace with England. Whether you attack France or Russia first is immaterial. You need to keep England off-balance and line up potential allies among the other nations. Try to engineer the alliances that will help you most. If France is your first target, you are going to want a Med sea power as an ally. Italy is the closest. Do what you can to see Italy becomes a power able to help you when you need him. The good German player tries to control the gam.e It is vital to his survival. If you see you efforts are for nothing in getting two countries to ally, bow to the inevitable, and maintain alliance with the countries which do ally. Having an alliance with a specific country is not as vital as having an alliance with the powers that be. How to combat the good German? A good idea is to get him out of the game early. To do that, you are going to have to play as a good German yourself. Write to his neighbors often. DO what you can to persuade them to attack him. If you are going to win, you need to control the game; you can't do that if someone else is. It's sometimes hard to identify the good German in other positions. A clue is when another country tries to influence you choice of first ally; or starts talking about helping you stab your ally in mid-game in 1901. He's probably a good German. ***** PART TWO ***** **** LIST OF GAME OPENINGS **** Moderated Replacement Openings include: Dien (coming soon) Unmoderated games openings include: drewids, elba, mac, belch Signups available for the following moderated games in formation: ounce, kaiser, sinai, dppf, sumatra, banzai Please volunteer to be a GM! **** LIST OF EP GAMES ON THE DA **** --- EXPLANATION --- Here is an update on games played on Judge. Each game is represented by a line of data (followed possibly by a line of comments --- please send me comments I can use if you are a GM!). The games are sorted according the the variant rules which are used. The 1st column gives the name of the game including a "#" if the game is a "private" or "unlisted" game. The 2nd column gives its Electronic Protocol number if available. If the game is published in another EP chapter (other than number two), then that is indicated after a slash. The 3rd column gives the name of the GM (see list of GMs below). The other columns give updates on this game in chronological order with the most recent entry on the right. The updates for a game in formation indicate the number of players needed to start. For example, -5. The updates for a game in progress indicate the season (F for Fall or S for Spring), the last 2 digits of the year, and the phase (M for movement, B for builds, and R for retreats). All this is possibly followed by the indication of the number of replacement players (-1), temporary replacements (T1) needed, or needed later on (*1). I'm listing the status of each game not only for this week but for the last several weeks, so that you can see not only where the game is, but how fast it is moving. This game went fairly smoothly for the solid English-German alliance, and after smashing France early in the game, the remaining countries could not work together from stopping Germany and England conquering the world. It was a stable and solid alliance, the only instability appeared in the last year, when England, after realizing that he had left a chance for Germany to get the 18th centre, moved forces in the Spring to guarantee an English win that year, however Germany did not waiver at all from the treaty, and the two parties quickly agreed to call it a draw! There are now only six players left in the game. If draws are allowed, this would correspond to something between a solo-win and a 2-way draw in a regular game. Will Ken really disallow draws? Only one way to know.... I hereby propose a six-way draw among the remaining players, send your votes to Ken --- unless he reaffirms that he disapproves of such votes. Belgium is capitalizing very intelligently on his new supply. He has empties Marseilles for the build of a Southern fleet. If only I had known. Nothing else major to report this year.
