SPARF Reseults --- Week 1 (part I) From: nicholso@pioneer.arc.nasa.gov (Melvin H. Nicholson YBH) Date: Wed, 25 Mar 1992 21:52:17 +0000 ~s League summary week 1 "This is Pamela Twitch, reporting the new news in this lively live report. Welcome back to all you old managers who survived the transition, and welcome aboard to the numerous new managers. Speaking of new managers, in the twelve matches between expansion teams and established teams, the very surprising result was that exactly half of those matches resulted in the newbie winning. It is not clear at this time how much of this is due to overconfidence on the part of the returning managers, and how much is just due to the talent on the new squads. The Hard Luck CSUA seems about ready to discard their old nickname, starting this season off with a strong win against the Mythstics and no injuries. The Havana Spaz attack released more than nervous energy when they demolished the Manix Maulers who were obviously underestimating the new team. Rumors that the very badly made lineup was prepared by Comissioner Mel himself while waiting for the new manager Jeremy Billones to take over the team have yet to be confirmed. The Tasmainian Devils managed a win over the Berlin Maniac Warriers through hyper-training, but found out like so many mangers did last season that the cost in terms of injuries is devastating. The League Champion Giant Redwoods won over the Philosophers 87-18. The self styled Sandman of SPARF, Mike Sanders, added another notch to the newcommer win stick by defeating Consolation Victors, the Bohemian Rhapsody, whose low scoring was probably due in no small part to some really bad shooting. The general trand of low scoring this week came to a climax when the Roxburgh Kittens edged the Palo Alto Guild by 18-8, closely followed by the Viking Raiders's 21-8 victory over the Holsworthy Hammers. The Novas squeaked out a 28-20 victory over the Muppets, and the Chaos Demon Stalkers just beat the Colombian Saints 35-28. The Cambridge Tigers won one of the closest games of the week 50-44, but incurred more injuries than they did during the entire course of last season, the age of the players starting to show. The big upset of the week was the Black Lectroids victory in Montreal over the Maulers, and the Borg repeated their win of last year over the Pinyin Mandarins with nearly the identical score. The Wimbledon Litter Collectors took full advantage of the injury to Vegard Larsen of the Bodoe Glimt to grab their win. Our bloodbath of the week was in Glasgow, as player after player left the field, some hobbling under their own power, others on stretchers. The carnage was so bad that by the fourth quarter neither team could mount an effective attack, so that all but one point of the 15-10 victory was scored in the first half. In sharp contrast the California Sluggers made their first win in the only injury free game of this week, beating the Livermore Rowdy Yobbos 40-14.
