I like Scott's proposal for its simplicity.

But...

This discussion leads me more and more to think that "player" units
should just be eliminated or re-designed.

Once you add heirs, player units as they are implemented right now
don't add much to the game.  The loyalty loss when a player unit is
killed is a nice thing, but that could probably be implemented in
other ways - like a loyalty loss when a Military Leadership unit is
killed.  Other than that, player units serve only to identify factions
(and what happens when a player unit dies and gets an heir? - all the
units appear to change factions).

It seems to me what you want is to assign each player a "faction
number" that will identify their units and eliminate the player unit
altogether.  I realize this would be a major coding change.

If player units are retained, I think they should be beefed up
considerably.  If they're going to be the "weak link" in a player's
position, they should get compensating bonuses.  First, they should be
the last unit killed in any battle they are involved in.  Players are
the heroes and idols that build empires, and they inspire "to the last
man" loyalty in their troops.  For the same reason, they should get
bonuses when doing anything relying on fame - Military Leadership,
recruiting and forming units, and units stacked with a player should
be immune to outside persuades and terrorize.  Finally, player units
and the units they are stacked with should be unable to use Stealth or
Magic to hide: they're famous, and known wherever they go.
