Okay, I started this thread, so let me end this.  My problem was not with
whether this command worked or not.  I simply did not think you could do this.
(I had wondered for a while what item "1" was, and why I never heard anything
about it.  Guess I'll examine my turn results more carefully next time).  I
hadn't noticed that gold was an item, and since there was the "apy" command
specifically designed to transfer gold, it never occurred to me to find out.
So, chalk this one up to me.

BTW, one way to avoid this in the future is put a note in the "PAY" command
that the command is simply a sorthand for "GIVE foo 1 ...".  That would have
cleared up my confusion.
