Introducing the EBA!!! From: krom@en.ecn.purdue.edu (Kevin M Krom) Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1992 21:13:22 +0000 Welcome to the EBA (Electronic Basketball Association)!!!! (c) 1992 Kevin Michael Krom This game may be used and distributed at will, as long as said distributions remain in the public domain. I would also request that any changes be sent to me for possible inclusion in the original version. 1.0 Introduction The EBA is a basketball simulation with the outcome relying on the abilities of the players on the opposing teams. Since the game uses random events, the best players may not always appear to have games up to their potential, but it should even out in the end. As a coach, you need to figure out how to set your team up to have the best chance of winning. 1.1 Previous Releases This is the first release of the EBA simulator. 1.2 Future Rleases These will include strategies, substitutions, and a chance to train your players. 2.0 Your Team In this release, you only have five players. You will be given "points" to spend on your players abilities. The abilities and player positions are detailed below. 2.1 Abilities All players are described by their six abilities: Shoot, Handle, Jump, Steal, Defend, and Speed. 2.1.1 Shoot Shoot is the primary factor in field goal attempts and the only factor in free throw shooting. 2.1.2 Handle Handle determines how successful your passing is. 2.1.3 Jump Jump is important in rebounding, and also (for centers) in getting the tip at the beginning of each half. 2.1.4 Steal Steal affects your chance on defense of breaking up a pass play. 2.1.5 Defend Defend is a factor in both defending shots and boxing out for rebounds. 2.1.6 Speed Speed is factored into almost everything, although not as heavily as the primary statistic. 2.2 Positions There are five positions: point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center. 2.2.1 Point Guard Runs the offense, very likely to pass rather than attempt a shot. Handle, Defend, Steal, and Speed are the most important abilities. 2.2.2 Shooting Guard Also needs to be able to handle the ball, but will pop the shot more often. Shoot, Defend, and Handle are the good abilities to have. 2.2.3 Small Forward The most versitile player, should be very well balanced. Any abilities are good to stock up on. 2.2.4 Power Forward Scores quite a bit, and gets his fair share of rebounds. You need to have Shoot, Defend, and Jump as your prime stats. 2.2.5 Center A black hole. If the ball gets to the center, he will shoot better than half the time. He is also the prime rebounder. Shoot, Defend, and Jump again. 3.0 Game Play The game is broken up into two 20-minute halfs. If the game is tied at the end of regulation, the game will go into 5 minute overtimes until one team is ahead at the buzzer. In this release, all play is 5 on 5 man-to-man. A play by play summary is printed out, and this is the report you as a manager will receive, plus a list of standings and stats. If you wish a full report of all games, I can send it, but it will be *LONG*. 4.0 Submitting A Team You have 5 players, with total ability scores of 300, 280, 260, 250, and 240. You may split up these scores however you like, in whatever positions you would like yor "superstar", "star", etc... in.
