Re: Olympia and Newbies From: M22367@mwvm.mitre.org Date: Thu, 14 May 1992 14:46:28 +0000 This idea of newbies having a turn to develop their 'clan' before they enter the world or of being otherwise invisible for one turn strikes me (IMHO) as a perfectly reasonable way to address this whole newbie problem. There is a 'realism' explanation and it would affect game balance in a positive way. Furthermore, it skirts the whole issue of NPC police forces. We (the PCs) are building the civilization of Olympia in the same way civilizations have always been built on the frontiers of Earth. First is lawlessness, then victims band together against bullies, then institutions to protect property rights develop, then a real economy develops... Allowing new PCs to prepare for their journey to the frontier seems altogether reasonable. Warlords may still kill them when they arrive, but they had their chance to buy a sword *before* they left town... - Mike (James Resolut 888) Referenced By Up
