Games for sale From: db0s+@andrew.cmu.edu (David M. Bartlett) Date: Wed, 20 May 1992 16:41:48 +0000 I have a collection of historical, SF and Fantasy war and adventure games for sale. Listed and described below: MUSKET & PIKE: Tactical Warfare in Europe (1550-1690) (SPI) $4.00 Game covers the introduction of fire-arms and the continued use of mass charges of cavalry and infantry in various European conflicts of the period. Scenarios include 30 Years War, French Religous Wars, Holy Roman Empire against Turks and Netherlands, English Civil War, English War of Succession. The game is simple (rules cover only about 4 pages) but not simplistic, creating the tactical flavor of morale, movement, formation, and weapons types of the period. If your RPG covers a similar period, a good way to resolve or incorporate large-scale combat (Three Musketeers and other swashbuckler -types occurred in this period; I've used it for this purpose as a GM). Comes with single geo-morphic map, 400 heavy stock counters, rules, historical background, various player aids. BATTLES OF BULL RUN: Manassas June 1961 & August 1962 (SPI) $4.00 Covers both key battles in the Civil War. Another straight-forward system, including morale rules. Comes in 18" x 12" zip-lock bag, with map, 200 heavy stock counters, rules, historical background, player aids. SOUTH AFRICA: Vestige of Colonialism (SPI) $3.00 A bit precious considering the current situation, but at the time (mid- 1970's) proposed a protracted guerrilla and conventional struggle between South Africa, internal rebel forces and intervention from neighboring countries. Strategic level game, concentrating on preparing for war as much as fighting it, as well as the economic costs that such a war would extract from all nations involved. A bit complex, but interesting. Zip- bag, Map, 400 multicolor counters, rules, background, player aids. AFTER THE HOLOCAUST: Rebuilding America (SPI) $10.00 Again, recent history has made this one (hopefully) obselete: After a nuclear exchange between the US and USSR where an SDI type defense blocked "most" of the missiles (i.e., only about 12-15 major US metro areas have little skulls and cross-bones on them), the rest of the country falls into minor chaos. The game begins several decades later, where 2 or more players (4 is ideal) start with limited territory and resources to rebuild their regions. Though military action can be used, economic planning, negotiation, bluff, and trade between players is ultimately the surest way to succeed, and the rules emphasize that. This game is complex and involved, though the player aids, maps, and counters help alot (VERY well designed from a graphics standpoint). But if you like DIPLOMACY or KING-MAKER, this is a fun game. Comes in a box, with a counter holder, 400 counters, thick and hard cardboard stock folding map, rules and background, all beautifully designed. In addition to straight play, we've used this in an RPG adventure when characters got to the point where they were influencial enough to get involved in local politics and economics. STARFORCE TRILOGY: Starforce, StarSoldier, Outreach (SPI) $15.00 THREE complete Games in one boxed set: STARFORCE uses simultaneous movement and action and three-dimensional combat rules to simulate inter-stellar warfare within 25 light-years of Sol. The Map is an accurate representation in 3-D of all stars in the radius. Game can be played on a strategic (easy) or tactical (moderate) level, either as single battles or extended campaigns. STARSOLDIER is the ground-forces companion of STARFORCE (scenarios in SOLDIER are linked to STARFORCE, and there are expansion rules to use both games in the campaign scenarios set up in STARFORCE). Tactical Game with simultaneous movement, large map usable on all scenarios. Again, single battles or extended campaigns can be played. OUTREACH is a different game entirely, for 2 or more players (solitaire rules are there, but the more the merrier in my experience). You set out to explore and/or conquer the galaxy, with emphasis on preparation for exploration and war as much as war itself. VERY strategic (single hexes on the map represent 1500 LIGHTYEARS), with some hexes containing key resources, others changing from game to game. The Map is very beautiful (I framed it under glass for a time and hung it in my office at the bank in Florida, covered the glass with little flags and symbols of the bank teller machine network used by a guy across the hall from me). All three games come with a common counter storage unit, independent rules booklets, game counters, maps, and players aids, but all in one package. For this reason, I'd like to keep them together and sell them as a set. BATTLEFLEET MARS: Wars against the Corporations 2093 (SPI) $10.00 Simulates a rebellion by space colonists on Mars and the Asteroid belt against the space Corporations of Earth, with the population of the Earth as a political force that can turn victory to either side in some contexts. In addition to a strategic game of movement, combat, negotiation, economic planning, ship building and propaganda, there is a tactical, 3-D, Newtonian movement spacewar game-system, using missiles, mines, and lasers to resolve specific battles. Again, space-war game can be played using individual battles or as part of longer campaigns, or ignored entirely in favor of the strategic combat system. The entire game is very "hard" science: the "stategic" map simulates the entire inner solar system, with rules for determining the proper orbits of all the inner planets and several key asteriods, as well as determining how long trips will take in months between them. Tactical system is very realistic (fire your rockets in one direction and continue in that direction until you change course or cancel that movement with more rocket fire; missiles try to home in until they run out of fuel; lasers are devastating but take a long time to recharge after each use); Strategic system emphasizes planning and politics as much as warfare. All graphics (maps, play aids and counters) are gorgeous, and rules and background info are good as well. Tactical game was used extensively in a SF RPG, and is fun, though campaign game can get involved. Final price will include postage & handling (1.50 to 2.00 per game) If interested in any or all of the above, contact me via email. First come, first serve. Dave Bartlett Gamemeister Up
