The following example is for you BtA... :-)

Suppose you are a great Wizard stacked upon, say, the Magicians Tower
[3506] in Chardia.  Suppose six apprentices are stacked with you.
Suppose you also have a guard unit of, say, 20 men of combat 2 with
you.  You would get either:

[There is another option I will mention below...]

Now, suppose one of those apprentices isn't on the up and up.  What he
could do, if he really wanted to screw the other 5 is this.  He could
study combat instead of magic up to, say, level 5.  He could have
another unit recruit, say 20 men, and train them up to combat 5.  In
one turn, he could pull into town with the 20 men, TRANSFER his# 19
from the combat unit, attack all of the OTHER people, UNSTACK, and
leave.  Of course YOU would be safe because YOU are at the top.  But
the problem is that you and your Guards would NEVER come to the aid
of your apprentices if upward defense doesn't happen.  Is this what
you want?  You COULD stack all of the apprentices into a daisy chain
with the guards at the bottom but then the traitor could simply
UNSTACK guards, and then attack EVERYONE.  Is this what you want?
What I am trying to show here is that you system makes it very
difficult for the person on top to guarantee the safety of those
underneath him.  I find this very problematic.  (Did I give anyone
any ideas? ;-)  YOU may be able to trust all of those underneath you
-- but can you really?  :-)
