Actually, if you use this logic it should be exactly reversed.  It
took thousands of years to go from the ground to the air, about fifty
years to develop jets and only another 15 or so before we made it to
space.  Since then things have been rather slow, but there haven't
been any world wars recently to spur people on...

In Galaxy that is not the case.
