Republic of Rome summary From: purtill@idacrd.UUCP (Mark Purtill) Date: Fri, 28 Aug 1992 18:25:40 +0000 The Republic of Rome play-by-email game I was running recently ended; here's a summary of what happened during the game. Each turn has a summary of the situation at the beginning of the turn, listing which Wars are Inactive (I), Active (A), or Unprosecuted (U). Then the factions are listed with the name of the faction, the player's name, and the senators along with their card number, any offices currently held (C=Censor; D=Dictator; F=Field Consul; P=Pontifex; R=Rome Consul), and current influence. After the summary comes a prose description of the important things that happened during that turn; details like who moved what money where are omitted. ****** A HISTORY OF ROME FROM EARLIEST TIMES TO ITS TRAGIC FALL ****** [Turn 1] [Treasury=100 Unrest=0 1st Punic War (I) FACTIONS: Ochlocracy (Jon Whitehead): Valerius (#3=5) Claudius (#5=4) Papirius (#11=3) Chthonians (Charles Martin): Furius (#8=3) Aurelius (#9=3) Flaminius (#13=3) Populists (Jeremy Billones): Fabius (#2=5) Acilius (#12=3) Terentius (#20=1) Phaedrus' the Lukullus (Asle Olufsen): Cornelius (#1=10) Calpurnius (#16=2) Plautius (#17=2) Plutocrats (Paul Dale): Fulvius (#7=4) Junius (#10=3) Sulpicius (#15=2) ] **Interregum Roman allies wavered as the 1st and 2nd Illyrian Wars broke out, and Philip V is crowned in Macedonia. Fabius (Pop-2) and Flaminius (Cht-13) are elected Consuls. **Consulate of Flaminius and Fabius Cornelius (Pha-1) is chosen Consul, and Papirius (Och-11) is elected Pontifex Maximus. He names Terentius (Pop-20) as a Priest. There are no prosecutions. Phadrus' faction uses Cato's (22A) tribune to have Plautius (Pha-17) and Calpurnius (Pha-16) sponsor a type I land bill. Junius (Plu-10) attempts to assasinate the later, but fails and is executed, leaving a Tax Farmer in the Forum. The land bill is then vetoed by the Pontifex Maximus Papirius (Och-11). The senate raises three fleets and eight legions, awards the Tax Farmer to Sulpicius (Plu-15) and sends Fabius (Pop-2) to fight the 1st Illyrian War with three fleets and twelve legions. Fabius wins, with a loss of three fleets and three legions. [Turn 2] [Treasury=154 Unrest=1 1st Punic War (I) 2nd Illyrian War (U) FACTIONS: Chthonians (Charles Martin): Furius (#8=3) Flaminius (#13R=8) Populists (Jeremy Billones): Fabius (#2F=12) Acilius (#12=3) Terentius (#20=2) Phaedrus' the Lukullus (Asle Olufsen): Plautius (#17=2) Cornelius (#1C=15) Calpurnius (#16=2) M. Porcius Cato the Elder (*22A=1) Plutocrats (Paul Dale): Fulvius (#7=4) Sulpicius (#15=2) Ochlocracy (Jon Whitehead): Claudius (#5=4) Valerius (#3=5) Papirius (#11P=8) ] Aurelius (Cht-9) dies. Manlius (6) joins the senate, and Papirius (Och-11) is persuaded by Cornelius (Pha-1) to join the Phadrus faction. Quinctius (18) also joins the senate, and joins the Chthonians. New members of the gens Aurelius (9) and Junius (10) join the senate. Claudius (Och-5) and Fulvius (Plu-7) are the new consuls. **Consulate of Claudius and Fulvius Flaminius (Cht-13) is elected Censor, and there are two prosecutions: Terentius (Pop-20) against the Pontifex Maximus Papirius (Pha-11), which is vetoed by the Pontifex, and Quinctius (Cht-18) against Calpurnius (Pha-16), which is vetoed by Cato's (Pha-22A) tribune. The Pontifex strips Terentius of his priesthood and makes Cornelius (Pha-1) a priest. A motion to strip the Pontifex of his title attains a majority, but not the required 2/3. Two fleets are built (for 40T, as there is a manpower shortage), and Fulvius (Plu-7) is sent to fight the second Illyrian War with two fleets and nine legions; he crushes the enemy at the loss of one fleet and the veteran legion. [Turn 3 -- August 1991] [Treasury=206 Unrest=4 1st Punic War (I) FACTIONS: Ochlocracy (Jon Whitehead): Claudius (#5R=9) Valerius (#3=5) Chthonians (Charles Martin): Furius (#8=3) Flaminius (#13C=13) Quinctius (#18=1) Populists (Marcus White): Fabius (#2=12) Acilius (#12=3) Terentius (#20=1) Phaedrus' the Lukullus (Asle Olufsen): Plautius (#17=2) Cornelius (#1=16) Calpurnius (#16=2) Papirius (#11P=8) M. Porcius Cato the Elder (*22A=1) Plutocrats (Paul Dale): Fulvius (#7F=11) Sulpicius (#15=2) ] No senator died. The Second Macedonian War broke out. Aurelius (9) joined the Ochlocrats, Manlius (6) the Chthonians, Aemilius (19) (a new senator) the Populists, and Junius (10) Phadrus'. Hamilcar leads the First Punic War against Rome. After a long election, Acilius (Pop-12) and Furius (Cht-8) are elected consuls. **Consulate of Acilius and Furius Fabius (Pop-2) is elected Censor, but declines to prosecute. Claudius (Och-5) seizes power [due to various factions missing the deadline]. Flaminius (Cht-13) is sent to Illyricum. Seven legions and thirteen fleets are raised, but a motion to send some of these forces to Illyricum is defeated. Furius (Cht-8) leads fourteen fleets to face the 1st Punic War, and wins with the loss of two fleets. Philip leads his Macedonians against Illyricum, but meets with disaster. L. Aemilius Paullus Macedonicus (Pop-19A) joins the senate. [Turn 4 -- January 1992] [Treasury=12 Unrest=8 1st Punic War, Hamilcar (A) 2nd Macedonian War, Philip V (U) FACTIONS: Populists (Mark Milke): Fabius (#2C=17) Acilius (#12R=8) L. Fulvius (Plu-7) donates 10T to the state. The Gallic War breaks out. Julius (4) becomes a Plutocrat, and Sulpicius (Plu-15) holds the first gladiatorial games on record. Antiochus becomes king in Syria, and there is a Manpower Shortage, but the allies donate 50T to the Roman coffers. Antiochus is assassinated in Syria. Aurelius (Och-9) and Paullus (Pop-19A) are elected Consuls. **Consulate of Aurelius and Paullus Julius (Plu-4) is appointed Dictator by the consuls, and Claudius (Och-5) is elected as Censor. Fabius (Pop-2) prosecutes Sulpicius (Plu-15) and Valerius (Och-3) prosecutes Calpurnius (Pha-16); the former is acquited, while the Pontifex Maximus Papirius (Pha-11) vetos the other presecution. 60T is spent on two new legions, and Paullus (Pop-19A), the veteran legion, ten other legions, and five fleets are sent to face the first Punic War, while the Dictator, Master of Horse Cornelius (Pha-1) and six legions face the Gauls. In Gaul, the situation is a stalemate with loss of two legions, while Paullus fights to a standoff in which he his killed, along with two fleets and three legions. In Illyricum, Flaminius (Cht-13) is able to fight the might of Illyricum to a standoff. [Turn 5 -- May 1992] [Treasury=14 Unrest=10 1st Punic War, Hamilcar (A) 1st Gallic War (A) 2nd Macedonian War, Philip V (U) FACTIONS: Ochlocracy (Jon Whitehead): Claudius (#5C=14) Valerius (#3=5) Aurelius (#9R=8) Chthonians (Bob Koester): Furius (#8=3) Manlius (#6=4) Flaminius (#13=13) Quinctius (#18=1) Populists (Mark Milke): Fabius (#2C=17) Acilius (#12=8) Terentius (#20=1) Phaedrus' the Lukullus (Asle Olufsen): Cornelius (#1=19) Junius (#10=3) Papirius (#11P=8) Calpurnius (#16=2) Plautius (#17=2) M. Porcius Cato the Elder (*22A=1) Plutocrats (Paul Dale): Fulvius (#7=12) Julius (#4=11) Sulpicius (#15=2) ] No senators die, and Furius (Cht-8) and Fulvius (Plu-7) each donate 25T to the state. The Syrians declare War on Rome, and Phillip redoubles his effort [1st Macedonian War]. Three fleets sink in Storms at Sea, and several senators sponsor games. Valerius (Och-3) and Sulpicius (Plu-15) are elected consuls. **Consulate of Valerius and Sulpicius Acilius (Pop-12) is chosen as Dictator, and Claudius (Och-5) is Censor. Fulvius (Plu-7) prosecutes Papirius (Pha-11) and Aurelius (Och-9) prosecutes Fabius (Pop-2). Papirius is cleared by a trial, but the populace storms the trial of Fabius and frees him before a vote can be taken. Flaminius (Cht-13) is replaced in Illyricum with Terentius (Pop-20), and Fabius (Pop-2) is aWarded the Armaments Concession. Six new legions are raised; five legions (including two veteran legions are sent to reinfoce Julius (Plu-4) against the Gauls, while the Dictator, his Master of Horse Cornelius (Pop-12), six legions and two fleets go to Syria. The 1st Macedonian War finally defeats Illyricum. In Syria, Acilius is victorious, but in Gaul, Julius meets with disaster and the Gauls sweep forWard to sack Rome. Only one faction had one player for the whole game (the Ochlocracy, Jon Whitehead). In terms of total influence, the Ochlocracy had 37, Lukullus faction was next with 35, tied with the Populists. The Plutocrats had 30, and the Chthonians finished with 24. (This is before all of the senators were hacked to death by invading Gauls, of course.) Thanks again to all players who participated; the perl scripts I used to run the game will be available shortly. ^.-.^ Mark Purtill, purtill@ccr-p.ida.org; uunet!idacrd!purtill. (609)497-0526.
