Here is the announcement from Danny. From: loeb@organon.greco-prog.fr (Daniel LOEB) Date: Tue, 25 Aug 92 09:39:07 +0200 I am pleased to announced the passage of the helm of Chapter Two of Electronic Protocol to Nick Fitzpatrick. Please send your EPC2 submissions directly to him at nick@sunburn.uwaterloo.ca. I began publication of EPC2 June of last year. At that time, JUDGE was already several years old and handled many variants. It adoption of the ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL NMR rules by default gave me the Green light to go ahead with this all JUDGE chapter. Since then JUDGE has grown. There are many more games, hundreds more players, and new JUDGE's popping up all over the place. Nick Fitzpatrick has kept close contact with all of these developments. He publishes regularly the Internet Guide to the Game Diplomacy, and the Diplomacy Adjudicator Hall of Fame. He also is owner of the DIPL-L mailing list (bit.listserv.dipl-l). I therefore have the greatest confidence that he will be able to do a better job running EPC2 than I have. In fact, these last few months, frequent trips and my work have prevented me from getting out EPC2 on a regular basis. Those which I did get out were often incomplete. However, you have not gotten rid of me yet. I hope to continue to submit articles as my schedule permits me. Thanks again to everyone who helped me run EPC2, and to Nick for taking over this project. Yours, Daniel Loeb loeb@geocub.greco-prog.fr Editor's Comment ---------------- Well I would like to thank Danny for his contribution to EP and Diplomacy, over 40 issues of EP chapter 2, if I have counted correctly. I also hope for, and welcome, his future contributions to EP Chapter 2. (After all, he still wrote the bulk of material in this issue of EP!) **** NOTE FROM KEN LOWE **** Following a recent conversation with Ken, when I commented about how much work it is to keep the judge running, he sent me this, and I thought it was appropriate to send it to everyone. From jdr@u.washington.edu Wed Aug 19 01:31:12 1992 I keep meaning to send this to you and/or your list so it can get a little wider distribution. At one point someone asked if anyone had proposed taking up a collection to get me a gift for the effort I put into the judge. I'm not really into soliciting compensation for my time, but there are those who have the desire to do something. It took me a couple of years, but I finally came up with a suitable response: You're quite welcome. Here's my canned kudos response: If you're looking for a way to show your gratitude, I will gladly accept a tee-shirt with your school or company logo or some other identifying design from your part of the world. Size medium to large (either a large medium or a small large), colored rather than white background, basic gray is good. If there are other judge clientele from your site you should contact them to see if they want to go in on it with you before doing something on your own. Then again, a simple postcard saying "thanks" is sufficient as well. -Ken Lowe University of Washington JE-30 4545 15th Ave NE; Suite 300 Seattle, WA 98105 Editor's Comment ---------------- Uggh, that American spelling really trips up my spell-checker (yeah I know, real petty . . .) **** AUSTRALIAN JUDGE **** Yes it does exist, the address is judge@gu.uwa.edu.au This judge is a full implementation of version 9 of Ken's code. It is open for all to use. Here is a current listing From judge@mullet.gu.uwa.edu.au Wed Aug 26 18:45:36 1992 Name Phase Variant/Options ------- ------ --------------- bing F1901B Standard, Any-site. twinkles S1901M Standard, Gunboat, 48 hrs, Any-site. cable S1901M Standard, Gunboat, Any-site. Forming: 5 more players needed. surgeon S1901M Standard, Any-site. Forming: 3 more players needed. **** SOUTH AFRICA JUDGE **** I saw an announcement in the game world that the South African judge (judge@shrike.und.ac.za) is also now open for all to use. It presently just runs the game world. **** STRANGE NEWTON OPENING (LETTER FROM DANNY)**** From loeb@organon.greco-prog.fr Tue Aug 25 05:30:04 1992 SPRING 1901 NEWTON While finishing off my list of Spring 1901 openings of games run on the JUDGE, I ran across a very unusual Austrian opening in the game NEWTON. Assuming game phase of S1901M in file S1901M. Movement results for Spring of 1901. (test.201) Austria: Army Budapest -> Serbia. Austria: Army Vienna -> Trieste. (*bounce*) Austria: Fleet Trieste CONVOY Army Vienna -> Greece. ... Italy: Army Rome -> Apulia. Italy: Army Venice HOLD. Italy: Fleet Naples -> Ionian Sea. In fact, it is very rare for anyone to consider convoying a landlocked army with a fleet in port to a province which is not adjacent to either. Actually, Ken says: >Hmmm, I guess you can order a convoy for a land-locked army. No big deal >since the army in Vienna couldn't have taken advantage of it. The code >that processes convoys has been modified to display "(*WARN: Check convoy*) >if you do something like that (assuming the army you're trying to convoy >is your own). The phase you're looking at was probably executed prior to >that or the player just didn't pay any attention to the warning. Maybe >he wanted an imaginative HOLD order. It really should have said (*void*) >when the results were processed though, I'll add that one to the bug list. However, this doesn't answer the question of why anyone would have thought that such a move might be legal. I then looked at the M001 file containing all of the player's orders. The player in question G***** A*** was having real problems. He submitted a total of 187 orders before he found something that the JUDGE would accept. Ken says this guy is has " threatened to come back in the fall after his vacation is over (just after taking over several powers that he had to abandon!!)." so look out for the dreaded inland convoy coming to a game near you! Yours, Daniel Loeb loeb@geocub.greco-prog.fr ***** PART TWO ***** **** LIST OF GAME OPENINGS **** Moderated Replacement Openings include: furlong, pint, quart, rad, ton, watt, sunda and corsica. Signups available for the following moderated games in formation: locust and mindanao. (krauts for german speakers only) Please volunteer to be a GM! **** MONTHLY LIST OF EP GAMES ON THE DA **** --- EXPLANATION --- Here is the monthly update on games played on Judge. Each game is represented by a line of data (followed possibly by a line of comments --- please send me comments I can use if you are a GM!). The games are sorted according the variant rules which are used. Also if you have an EP number, and I don't, please send it to me. Column Explanation ------ ----------- (1) Name of game including a "#" if game is "private" or "unlisted" (2) Electronic Protocol number (and Chapter) if available. (3) Name of the GM (see list of GMs below). (4-10) Updates on game in chronological order (most recent on the right) The updates for a game in formation indicate the number of players needed to start. For example, -5. The updates for a game in progress indicate the season (F for Fall or S for Spring), the last 2 digits of the year, and the phase (M for movement, B for builds, and R for retreats). All this is possibly followed by the indication of the number of replacement players (-1), temporary replacements (T1) needed, or needed later on (*1). --- LIST --- Name EP# GM Jan3 Feb4 Mar10 Apr3 May22 Jun30 Aug26 ------- --- -- ---- ---- ----- ---- ----- ----- ----- STANDARD RULES cubit 158 jdr S01M S02M F03M S05R ?
