EK They seem to be disappearing. I will soon formally shut them down. EK I am currently up to EP #199 in games that have been given numbers. Please start assigning numbers at EP #205 and send me all the numbers along with the latest Judge summary of type of game and list of players for that game. I'll reserve EP #200 - #204 for myself so we don't give one game the same number. I formally christen you "Judge EP# Master". I'm open to better suggestions for your title! EK The Gunboat Round Robin tournament by Jamie has been assigned EP#s 173-179. The standard gunboat game by desper, Sarajevo, has EP# 195. EK Note that I don't want to give an EP# for giggles because it is a local ERIM game. I prefer that no more than two players are from one state. Giggles really violates this rule. I also don't give EP#s to Machiavelli games. They are not considered a variant because they are marketed as a completely separate game by Avalon Hill. *** NEW HALL OF FAME (with points) *** I have completed a new hall of fame, and for the first time since 1988, it has points. The points were assigned on the basis of (P-W)/W, where P is # of players (7 standard, 10 youngstown) and W is number of drawees (people who draw??) (1 if a single win). The number of points is multiplied by the percent of the game that the player played (eg if France joined in 1906, and won in 1910, the final player would get 0.4*6.0=2.4 points, and the original player would get 0.6*6.0 = 3.6 points. This is causing some debate (see below). Survivors get 0 points. So, the points would look something like Variant Standard Youngstown Chaos Win 6.00 pts 9.00 pts 33.00 pts 2-way tie 2.50 pts 4.00 pts 16.00 pts 3-way tie 1.33 pts 2.33 pts 10.33 pts 4-way tie 0.75 pts 1.50 pts 7.50 pts 10-way tie ----- 0.00 pts 2.40 pts I am going to invite the top players in a few weeks to participate in a championship game (hall92). I will update the results before then, so if I am missing some (ie the game has survivors listed!), or I missed something, please contact me. To obtain a copy of the Hall of Fame, please contact me directly.(nick@sunburn.waterloo.edu). I am missing the results for the following games: cannon, diamond, emerald, flip, inch, koursk, land, nifty, snake and yank. Danny has suggested that only the last player of each position should get any points (unless the GM says otherwise). From: heinau@groucho.chemie.fu-berlin.de (Vera Heinau) Subject: Re: New Hall of Fame (with points!) NF Survivors get 0 points. VH Hmm... maybe you should consider to give a "minimal point" to them (e.g. 0.1 or 0.05). I think this would be a incentive for many people to overtake abandoned powers even if there is clearly no chance to win the game or to take part in a draw. Additionally I think it is better to survive than to be eliminated :-) and that should be honoured in some way... NF Yeah, but that encourages people to try and survive, rather than stop someone from winning. VH Hmm, I see the problem. But does this happen very often? If a power has the possibility to join an alliance against the leader it will do that in most cases, I think - as happened in game water. It may differ if the game is a gunboat game because there are no agreements possible. VH And:The strategy that to help the leader (and to survive) is better than to be destroyed is clearly supported by the judge - you will get "judge- points" for your orders (but only if you aren't eliminated of course ;-) so it might be desirable to survive, even if this means to help the leader. NF I don't think anyone ever considered the accumulation of dedication points (judge points) as an indication of playing skill, simply as an indication of dedication to the game. NF I have always believed that surviving in the game was meaningless (as at the point in the game when 18 supply centres is reached, invariably there is no chance of stopping the winner taking all 34 centres (although sometimes this is debatable) VH I fear that not getting "Nick-Points" ( :-) would be the lesser evil for many players... NF That is something I fear as well! |~| Vera Heinau | Freie Universitaet Berlin / \ heinau@Groucho.Chemie.FU-Berlin.DE | Institut fuer Kristallographie /FUB\ heinau@fub.uucp | Takustrasse 6 `---' phone +49 30 838-3612 | D-1000 Berlin 33 Germany *** DRAWS (NOTE FROM KEN LOWE) *** Ken sent me a copy of this letter that he sent to another player From jdr@u.washington.edu Fri Aug 28 01:07:14 1992 To: Name Withheld Subject: Draw proposal > I'd like to propose that game xxxx be declared a draw. Unless we > make a colossal blunder, France and I can easily destroy England > and Russia who are the only players left. We have been in alliance > for some time, and there is no threat of a stab, or he would have > done it long ago. It doesn't sound like you're playing Diplomacy then. The object of the game is for one power to control 18 centers (sic). This means that you'll eventually have to stab everyone in the game if you intend to win and there's no point in playing unless that is your intent. That's what makes Diplomacy such a wonderful game. You can't win it unless you trust someone else as an ally and yet you have to do something untrustworthy to them, or they to you, in order to complete the game. Playing the game for a two way draw is not reasonable as it is not a probable outcome. If a third player remains on the board he should be included equally in the draw. Draws include all survivors. It's possible to wipe out all the opposition and end up with a 17/17 position, but it would be very difficult to hold such a position as a stalemate. If one of you can obtain one of the other's centers he should go for it as it means the difference between winning and stalemating. I don't know if there is standard scale to evaluate how good a player is, but if I were to design one I would make a draw worth something like 420 points (because it comes out even) divided by the number of remaining players and a win worth 1000 points. If you decide that the game is a stalemate because (a) no further ground can be gained by attacking the enemy, (b) the enemy can be held off indefinitely and (c) any attempt to backstab an ally would be suicidal by allowing an enemy (including that ally) to gain a winning advantage, then you can petition for a draw. That petition should be sent to the moderator of the game or to me in the event of an unmoderated game and I'll hold a poll to determine whether the game should be declared a draw. -Ken Editors Note ------------ Hmm, that raised the whole question of not using the DIAS rule in the Hall of Fame . . . *** CHAOS GAMES *** A player in zenith asked me Nick; I got the message about Naples being abandoned, but the build order that I sent in was returned error-free. I will attempt to sign back on to see what happens. After you sent the build order, if you send a mail message with some garbage in it somewhere, the same thing will happen. I will talk to jdr about this, I have a couple of other minor bugs to report. I noticed another resignation in the game (Serbia). I am concerned that it might not be possible to keep 34 people active in this game at one time. Has the judge run a 34 player chaos game before, without massive abandonments? Hmm, didn't see that one. Yes we have had 34 player games before, fontenoy and iona. Fontenoy started in early 1991, but was on hold for most of the summer of 1991, due to a lack of players. It has done well since then. iona started (I believe) with 29 players (5 players started with two countries), and it has been moving steadily since it started in Jan 1992. This is the first start in a summer for a chaos game, and that in itself is an indication of the increase in the number of players on the judge. We should have little problem maintaining this game, especially after everyone else returns from their summer vacations in September. (NOTE: There is presently an opening in each of fontenoy, iona and zenith!!) *** PRESS QUESTIONS *** A player asked me these questions about press messages. Thank for answering my question about leaked password. I have more questions, this time about observers: 1. Do observers get to read inter-player communication? No, however a game master can, if he wants to. How about when a message is sent to all players? If the message is sent with the command press he can, if it is sent with the command press to aefgirt he can not, to include observers and alternates with the above command, use o for observers, and % for alternates (and m for master) 2. Can I send messages directly to observers through the Judge? See above 3. Why do I sometimes see someone signs on as an observer only to resign minutes later? (this happened several times!) Shouldn't really happen. Unless there is an obvious reason (Ie a message) then it is probably someone trying to remember their password, for if someone signons as an observer with a different password, they will be registered twice, so they have to keep trying until they find the right one! One more question, not about observers: Is the transcript of messages communicated through the judge stored anywhere? or are they purged immediately after transmittal? If they are stored, can a full log be obtained AFTER the game (so players can see what REALLY went on)? They are stored for about a week after they were sent, Ken says it would take too much disk space to keep them any longer. (However they are available immediately to the master, if he uses the set all press command. General broadcasts to everyone can be retrieved, (before and after the game is finished) by sending the history command to the judge history [game] [from DATE] [to DATE] [lines N] *** MINOR JUDGE UPGRADE *** Ken recently upgraded the judge to version 9.6 Here are the changes: Add lva as an abbreviation for Livonia. Correct history command to require significant space so that "history topple" doesn't get interpreted as "history to pple". Add "set no reveal" command to prevent players in gunboat games from being exposed if the game is part of a tournament. Correct summary command to not display power ownership changes if the quiet flag is set. Add display of parameters to the summary command (won't take effect until game in question completes another season). Version 9.6 blake (judge) Fri Aug 28 19:57:44 PDT 1992 *** RFD TO CREATE REC.GAMES.DIPLOMACY *** An RFD (request for discussion) has been filed to create the Usenet newsgroup rec.games.diplomacy This will not effect EP, or DIPL-L or bit.listserv.dipl-l If you do not know what Usenet is, don't worry, you probably can't get it. At the moment there is some discussion of the game Diplomacy in the groups rec.games.pbm and rec.games.board The idea is to centralise the discussion in one group. This is not a vote, a vote will (may) take place in one month. This has been brought about by a proposal to create rec.games.abstract, for abstract strategical games. I do not want diplomacy discussion to splinter into this group as well, so I thought it was about time someone tried to create the long rumoured rec.games.diplomacy. Here is the RFD ---------------------------- This is a Request For Discussion on the creation of a newsgroup for the Game of Diplomacy. Group Name ---------- rec.games.diplomacy Status ------ Unmoderated Rational -------- Diplomacy is a very popular board game, that has also been adapted to play by mail (snail and E). There are presently over 120 games ongoing over the Internet, being played by people across the world. There are four automated Diplomacy programs (in four continents) connected to the Internet processing games. There is much discussion of the game in the groups rec.games.pbm, rec.games.board and bit.listserv.dipl-l (dipl-l@mitvma.mit.edu). The problem is that diplomacy is split between two many places, and its bitnet list does not get a wide enough distribution. rec.games.diplomacy would provide a focus for discussion which currently appears in a number of groups, often to the annoyance of readers. Charter ------- The newsgroup would be for the discussion and organisation of the game Diplomacy. Both regular (ie face to face) and play by mail would be discussed. Voting ------ If all goes according to plan, voting will take place one month from the posting date of this RFD. Follow-ups directed to news.groups *** PLUG FOR OLYMPIA *** Danny writes: From: loeb@mistral.greco-prog.fr (Daniel LOEB) Tue Sep 1 06:14:09 1992 You might consider telling EPC2 readers about OLYMPIA.
