EP Chapter 2 policy change PART TWO - Summary of all moderated games on the Judge: See last issue PART THREE - Report from the Battle Front Fontenoy EOG Report ***** PART ONE ***** *** KEN ANNOUNCES END OF WASHINGTON JUDGE *** Ken Lowe recently send the following, about getting rid of the judge. From: Judge Dash Request <jdr@u.washington.edu> Date: Tue, 17 Nov 92 15:39:22 -0800 NF I fear that if the load increases much more, that the judge will be NF unusable. I fear that if the load remains the same it will be unusable. I've decided that I've had about all the Diplomacy that I can take for this lifetime. It was fun up until a year ago, but I've gotten a case of burnout and am now ready to call it quits. Other interests in my life have taken priority and keeping up with the judge has become a chore rather than a pleasantry. I'm ready now to disable the create command altogether and let the current games play to their conclusions without my help. End of an era, I guess. I only got one tee-shirt and four postcards from players (three of the postcards came from John O'Regan) so the support I'm getting for my efforts is such that I don't really feel too obligated to continue. If other people want to start up their own judges, I'd say that now is the time to start making them public if they're not already that way. NF Since about the end of September, the judge appears very slow during NF the day. Is there other software running on blake that didn't used NF to be there? No, the only thing that blake does is to process Diplomacy. The judge's databases were never really designed to handle the number of players or games that are currently involved. A lot of redesign would be necessary to streamline it to support this many people easily. I'm not prepared to put in the effort to do that work. Blake is only a little surplused Micro-Vax II. The judge currently averages 650 cpu minutes per day. Yesterday's usage was a whopping 1078 minutes and that doesn't include the overhead of sending out the mail. 1440 would be 24 hours. I'd say we're saturated here. NF I will not be assigning any more, from angel on... (hmm, angel, bible, NF christ, devil, ... god, hallelujah, ... jesus ... :) No; angel, bass, carp, dogfish, flounder ... :) I'm going to shut off the generic games before we get past bass if I can code it that quick. Games seem to be starting at the rate of 1 per day and it is increasing geometrically. -Ken I responded: Thanks Ken, to tell the truth I think we could see it coming. I will publish this to all this evening. I think everyone will appreciate you maintaining the judge until the current batch of games is finished. Nick I would also like to thank Ken for his devotion to the game over the years, and I hope that everyone else out their shows their appreciation. I well know the feeling he has, as I too am trying to reduce my workload, before I get burnout. This is indeed the end of an era, with the creation of rec.games.diplomacy, the demise of the Washington judge and the recent reduction of EP to only 2 chapters. Whether it is for the good or not, I do not know. I am sure that this will not mean the end to automated Dip on the Internet, there are two full implementations of the Judge now running elsewhere, and Lars is promising to get his back up again. Ken's source code is available by FTP from milton.u.washington.edu in the public/misc subdirectory. *** EP CHAPTER 2 POLICY CHANGE *** I announced the following policy change recently: Some of it may change due to the demise of the judge. Due to the surge of moderated games presently being created in Ken Lowe's name, I am changing the policy of EP Chapter 2, and no longer carrying those games, starting with the game angel (now forming). These games will no longer be considered part of EP Chapter 2. (All previous games, to which I have assigned an EP number, will still remain in EP Chapter 2, until their completion). These games will still remain part of the (independent) Hall of Fame. Also, in an attempt to reduce my workload, I am looking for people to take over DIPL-L, and EP Chapter 2. No experience necessary (after all, I didn't have any!). I am retaining the Hall of Fame . . . (I guess Ken is looking to reduce HIS workload too!) Nick ***** PART THREE ***** *** FONTENOY EOG REPORT *** The first chaos game, which first started forming in the Fall of 1990, ended recently, here is the EOG report, from Danny Loeb, the creator of the CHAOS variety, on the judge. This game, was EP 114. 1901 As Greece, in my pregame negotiations, I immediately attempted to contact my neighbors Ser and Bul. Bul did not reply, so I agreed with Ser to build a fleet, so as to allow him to concentrate on the north - figuring he had enough neighbors as it is. In return, he would support me into Bul(sc), and I would build another fleet. I then contacted my 2nd order neighbors. The Turks seems to be working out a peace. Rumania was willing to help against Bulgaria. In the West, I tried to create a DMZ in the Ionian between myself Naples and Tunis. However, Tunis was silent. Around now Bulgaria reappeared, but it was too late for me to radically change my plans. I tried to cover up my intentions, but Bul later said he was 95% sure I would attack him. However, Serbia backed down from his promised support saying that cooperation with Rum "queered the deal" with him. Instead, Rumania is dislodged to Galicia. (Nevertheless, he goes on to make a new home in Bud, with the support of Ser! and ends up surviving to 1907, see below.) Meanwhile, an Italian alliance forms in the West with Tunis as their first objective. I'm worried that without any tenable allies, they will turn against me after Tunis is out. I tell them that they must include me in their alliance if they are to expect my cooperation. I am readily accepted into the alliance which tentatively decides to move East against the Turks while Iberia fights the Brits. My support for Tunis was a white elephant for had he moved to the Ionian, Rome would have slipped into Tunis. I am worried about the Turkish alliance and ask Bulgaria to bounce me there, and prevent the Turks from getting a second build. However, he doesn't answer, so I take no action. Bulgaria actually supports Smyrna into his capital in exchange for later support into Sevastopol. This makes Turkey the major threat on the board very quickly. 5 SC in the hands of 3 players. 1902 I am now negotiating with a wider and wider circle of partners. This gives me perspectives on the game which make me along with Venice central to the "Greco-Roman" or "GRITS" alliance. Smyrna stabs Ankara. This is a pleasant surprise for me as it neutralizes a major threat and allows me to walk into Bulgaria despite Serbia's non-support. However, to capitalize on this I must keep Greece. I make a prearranged bounce with Naples there, but Serbia takes Bulgaria with the support of Smyrna. I disband my fleet but rebuild it in Greece after consultation with Venice. Venice has formed an Austrian alliance with Trieste and Rumania. As they become successful, I later decide to officially unite the two alliances. I am worried that as 2 independant alliances Venice would have too many backstab possibilities. Thus, we are now a group of 6 at the negotiating table facing the Turks. 1903 The Austrian-Italian pair of alliances makes major advances. The stab by Smyrna although not fully believed by the west allows an opening into the East Med while Smyrna enters the Aegean sea. At the same time, as the Rum/Ven/Tri alliance conquer Austria and the Balkans, Bulgaria seeks refuge in Spring 1903 via a surprise convoy to by Ankara to his own capital. 1904-1905 Further progress against the Turks seems inevitable, and a new concern appears in the North as S-Munich's alliance takes a visible lead. However, at this time many players in the game are replaced as the game goes into hold over the summer: Edi/Lon/Mar/Rum/Smy/Stp/Tri/Ven. When the game resumes the remaining members of the Austro-Italian alliance, try to convince the new members to continue the old policies, but even we are not sure the alliance still exists. Moves are leaked to the adversaries, so that no one knows who to trust anymore. And then Rumania stabs his neighbors although it seems inevitable that the Northern forces which eventually take his gains. As Greece, I attempt to discuss peace terms with the Turks. However, these discussions are opposed by Serbia who alternately broke the agreements, or vetoed them. 1906 The big headline this year is that J-Greece - champion of peace - has been eliminated. The turkish treachery has been anticipated, and T-Naples supplied the needed support, but instead of supporting Greece as promised Y-Rumania helped an attack by X-Rome against T-Naples, thus cutting that very need support. In other news, T-Nap 4-Swe W-Por and 5-Tri are eliminated bringing the ranks down to 12 approximately the 1/3 mark! Spain continues to be the hot spot on the board. No one has managed to hold it for two years! Is P-Lon's move a real backstab of the BSPIN3 alliance or is it just a measure to keep the opposition disorganized. The opposition to BSPIN3 has now all been eliminated or is fighting against each other. Only X-Rom is of any consequence among the resistors. While on the other hand, S-Mun has gobbled up his sixth supply center. It difficult to conceive of any sort of alliance liable to stop S-Mun. 1907 The big news of two years ago, Y-Rumania, is now history. After having destroyed the alliance he was part of, he now is subdued by the forces his alliance had been set up against. Meanwhile, I-Edinburgh is eliminated. Clearly, S-Munich saw him of little use completely behind allied lines, so last year he denied him a build by taking Denmark, and this year Norway is handed to Belgium to complete the squeeze.... Of course this leaves the alliance without any vowels. How will the alliance be pronouncable... I know, they can always invite in A-Ankara! P-London's stab last year was a move to a take a decision making seat in the alliance. He took some of B-Belgium's supply centers, and threatened to remove them from the south (letting X-Rome into the Atlantic) if they were taken back. Well, open warfare hasn't taken place on the P/B front, but P-London has lost a supply center. Will he therefore remove (F MAO)? The Turks are now past their previous high water mark---back when I was organizing the anti-Turk alliance. Of course, S/3 is a larger force in the area, and the recent moves to Serbia indicate a bit of a lack of coordination. Perhaps Z-Serbia is being squeezed out of the alliance? And are thhe Turks working with StPete? We are now down to 10 players---less than 1/3 of the starting pool. I expect 7-Venice is not too long for this world ... unless X-Rome allows him to retreat backwards onto his supply centers. In a year or two, Munich's allies will have conquered the world, but what will happen then? A draw, or merely a continued series of squeezes? 1908 The latest elimination: Z-Serbia. No big suprise, since the Turkish alliance had been forced to take him out of necessity, yet perhaps regretted it, since Z-Serbia's unique diplomatic style ruined many opportunities for growth. Now, the Turks have a bit of a respite since the people previously attacking them are now being eliminated. We are now down to 9 players. 7-Venice is almost sure to be eliminated in 1909. While X-Rome will probably be kicked out of Greece. This will set the stage for a rapid fall of Italy in 1910. While the 3 main powers S-Munich, B-Belgium, and 3-StPete controlling together 18 supply centers are still working together, all is not quiet on the Northern front. B-Belgium appears not to have REALLY forgiven P-London's treachery a few turns back. In a suprise move, he take London and Liverpool. Chances are London and Liverpool will not be able to hang on long. 1909 Another year another elimination... P-London has bit the dust. I had warned him when he took over the position that he wasn't taking the Belgique threat seriously. He responded that if he actively countered Mun/Bel then he would be crushed. As it turns out, he was. Was his gambit too late, or did he have no chance to begin with? Hard to tell. There might be yet another elimination this year. If 7-Venice prefers to die in honors rather than back pedalling over the supply centers of his ally since 1901 X-Rome. Note that a Venetian forfeit will not influence the fate of Italy, since Rome can in that case build an army (or fleet) in Rome. 3-StP got a pleasant suprise this Fall. An interesting bounce allowed him to keep Trieste which he probably had not counted on. Moreover, since the supply center is empty this will allow him the build of a Southern fleet. This fleet will be the first Southern fleet in the hands of the BS3 alliance (now totalling 21 supply centers), since N-Liverpool in Marseilles was still in the alliance. This fleet will be particularly useful in the Balkan/Turk campaign, since for the moment StPete is suffering from a bit of a traffic jam. Although the strategy remains interesting, there were no diplomatic surprises this year. If this keeps up, then it is a matter of time before we see a 3S or BS3 draw. 1910 Finally, I can start a Fontenoy update WITHOUT an obituary. No country was eliminated this year. In fact, only 4 centers have changed hands. The BS3 alliance (now up to 23 SC's) has taken Rome and Edinburgh, and exchanged Marseilles for Spain. England will surely fall in the next year. While Italy (now in my hands after the CD of his original commander) is in a precarious situation. Rome should be able to struggle on in the Iberian pennisula for another couple of years. In the end though, nothing can stop a 23 SC alliance... except perhaps Ken Lowe's no draw rule. As of yet no real signs of war amongst BS3 (except perhaps the army in Burgundy???).... 1911 After a long, but in the end futile struggle, Liverpool, the last of the English, is defeated. There are now only six players left in the game. If draws are allowed, this would correspond to something between a solo-win and a 2-way draw in a regular game. Will Ken really disallow draws? Only one way to know.... Belgium is capitalizing very intelligently on his new SC. He has emptied Marseilles for the build of a Southern fleet. If only I had known. The big news for this year is a massive backstab of Stp by Munich. Stp had given his complete trust to Munich, keeping all of his forces stockpiled in the far reaches of the board, and left far too many supply centers open for Munich to refuse the temptation --- especially after GM Ken Lowe repeats his new draw policy. 1912 No eliminations this year, but lots of action. StP fights back against Mun who had backstabbed him last year by joining the southern powers. His cooperation with the southern forces is as total as his former cooperation with Munich. He hands over many SC as a token of a good will, and then continues to participate in the detailed planning of moves. Bulgaria's move to Ankara last year frightened Ankara a little, but it turns out to have just been a typographical error as the unit moves back to Armenia. The question now is how much will this error cost St Pete in the North. Misplay by Rome allows Belgium to swarm over the Iberian pennisula. But Rome avoids exinction by regaining his capital. Belgium has transfered a supply center (Holland) to Munich in order re-equilibrialize the alliance --- or was that a backstab? In any case, Belgium has lost its forward army in Piedmont. This will be rebuilt in the rear.... This shifting is of tactical value to the Southern alliance, and perhaps strategic value as well as this might now encourage Belgium to attack the now weakened Munich --- rather than fight his way through to well defended Tunis/Italy. 1913 The game continues to be a slugfest, as both alliances BS and XAF3 stay stable. After some exciting battles, BS has the upper hand, but XAF3 has good hopes to hold some sort of stalemate line. The stalemate line is technically very complicated because Stp's forces occupy key positions. However, these units are supplied by SC's unprotected by the stalemate line. A very complicated plan is devised by which Stp's units are slowly replaced on the front as they disappear. The timing is critical, and Stp is to be left with only 1 or 2 units. The question is whether the GM (having previously denounced draws) will accept this one.... 1914-1916 In 1914, I give control of Rome to one of my students while I am on a trip, and he allows it to go CD. The game bogs down as the proposed stalemate goes into effect. Then in 1916, Munich stabs his remaining ally in an attempt to make something happen, and shake up the board a bit. 1917 The Southern forces (XAF and 3, formerly of the Northern alliance) were all set to defend a last ditch stalemate line, when The Northern alliance finally breaks down and Munich stabbed Belgium. The Southern forces have taken advantage of their disarray and advanced into the Atlantic Ocean. Soon after that S-Munich still in the lead with 12 supply centers goes civil disorder after 17 years of play. At this point, the original S-Munich disappears, and I take the helm. My 3rd role in the game. The alliance I had helped to create is now arrayed against me, and already has drawn blood giving London the opportunity to build behind my lines. I offer him anything to waive the build in London but in vain. I offer my capital to Stp or Rome in order to break up the alliance against me. My position in Russia is a big stalemate, but Rumania and I agree to each remove a unit from the back lines in order to defuse the hopeless situation. 1918 The game has become much more liquid, and has separated itself into two parts. In the south, the original capitain of X-Rome resumes the helm after a decade of retirement. In a sudden move, he steers X-Rome out of the Southern alliance. However, A-Ankara and 3-StPete anticipate this move, and launch an effective pre-emptive strike. F-Bulgaria hesitates which side to take, but sees his SC's in Turkey as extremely vulnerable and agrees to create a DMZ in Russia accordingly. In the north, the two current leaders B-Belgium and S-Munich are fighting amongst themselves. 1919 The Southern powers hope to quickly eliminate Rome, and resume their stalemate line. Meanwhile, Belgium has been left high and dry, and abandonned. As we end our second decade of play, in a surprise move, Belgium and Munich re-ally. Belgium removes its fleet in the North Sea which had been such a thorn in Munich's side. In the following seasons, Belgium and Munich regain their own capitals which the other had taken in previous years. I as Munich could see eventual gains over Belgium, but the last few supply centers needed to reach 18 (Mar,Spa) would surely be well defended, and a stalemate line could easily be reformed, resulting in a large draw. Instead, I was courted by Belgium who otherwise feared near or total extinction, asking in return only "to be gentle in the end". Together they move South, to the aid of Rome who had been beseiged by the other Southern powers. Rome thus regains Trieste, and St Pete must remove a precious unit. Regardless of what choice is made it will be nearly impossible for the Turks to regain any semblance of a stalemate line. 1920 With the near collapse of Turkish defenses, Belgian forces have advanced quite far, and for each advance he took, I crept in behind him. Now, a great number of his supply centers are vulnerable to my forces. I asked him not to take Tunis in 1919, but now his conquest of Tunis is inevitable. Together with Vienna which falls this year into my hands from the Turks, I count a total of 18 (or even 19 with Budapest?) possible supply centers. Until the very last minute, secrecy must be kept. A stab by Rome would cost Vienna, and delay my inevitable victory by one year. However, a preemptive defense by Belgium would make the route to victory quite unclear. Fortunately, at this point the Belgian player is very busy with a new job, and perhaps a bit bored with the game, and is too uncommunicative with the players to organize any kind of defense. SUMMARY ------- I really enjoyed playing in this first Chaos diplomacy game, so much that I eventually played 3 different roles, and signed up for the second game. The most interesting feature of the game are the huge alliances that are formed towards the middle of the first decade. The game eventually cristalizes into two alliances. However, until that happens each player wants to achieve regional superiority, since an alliance with many small members is less flexible than a more compact alliance. Towards the end of the game, units become more and more mixed up, this gives more opportunities to stab, and increases the need for detailed cooperation on moves. I still have my press records for the game available (sorted by country) if anybody cares to refer to it. MESSAGE FROM ROME From: Steven Noyd Jones <noyd@u.washington.edu> (ROME) When I dropped out in 1909, there were 7 powers remaining out of 34. When I rejoined in 1917 there were still 6, all of which survived to 1920. Somewhere in there, this game transmuted from chaos into a one hardly distinguishable from a standard game. Is this a common tendancy of Chaos games I wonder? As a returning player to Rome after an 8 year absense, I was also quite surprised to encounter a very strong and entrenched 3AF alliance more concerned with not losing than with winning. Somewhere in the middle I think the character of the game had changed. Right about the time I'd dropped out in 1909, the GM (ken) had sent out a message to the players explaining that in this game (Chaos) there was no draw - it was winner take all. This led almost immediately to a German backstab of Russia. Munich's willingness to take the steps needed to win have won a well deserved victory.
