New Email Game: 'Senator' From: rjr@titan.ucc.umass.edu (Richard J. Resnick) Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1992 22:21:03 +0000 This morning, I was reading a new newsgroup, called 'rec.games.abstract'. In it, there was talk of a game which goes by the name of 'Nomic'. It spawned an intense reaction in me, and I am going to be running an email game which is based off of it. This game is based on making rules by popular decision, and the 'game' is actually 'making' the game. Essentially, we will start with two rules: 1) New rules are proposed by players and voted on by them. Majority decides. 2) I, the implementor, get a limited veto power, which will only be used if a rule is to be instated which is too tough for me to implement. Essentially, the rest is up to the players. There is no way to win at the beginning, but of course, the object of the game can be voted on. A sample proposition: 'I, <player-name>, propose that the winner of the game is the person to score 100 points, and furthermore, that points can only be scored by successfully passing a proposition. Each proposition which is proposed by a player, and which is voted into effect, gives the proposer 10 points.' Then, the others would vote on this proposition, and so on, and so on. The beauty of this game is that no one really knows where the game will go, and I wouldn't be surprised to see some very strange and strategic set-ups by the end of the game. I am willing to take on up to 20 players in this game. Email updates will occur once per week. I would really like to have extremely creative thinkers involved, people who won't hold back on propositions. Anything goes in Senator, and I want to see how far we can take it. If you are interested, reply to the address on the header. (rjr@titan.ucc.umass.edu). I'll send you out a rule book and we'll be getting started soon. Thanks in advance for your time.
