One of my favorite/useful tactics is to take an early offensive. What
this does is while everyone else around you is developing industry, you can
take them out THEN develop industry. This gives you not only breathing room.
But also a size 1000 resource 10 planet to develop. So say you have 3 people
within 35 LY's of you. You make allies with one or two, and blow up the other
1 or 2. This gives you a good secure situation. No REAL fights over planets,
and if you took out the guy who always seems to be just more than 20 LY's away.
then you have a GREAT planet to colonize and use top build your fleet and
"catch-up" with the top guys. One thing to keep in mind, is if you are at the
top of any "list" that will make you a target for alot of things including
Allies, AND enemies. In Game 7 right now, I have Aliances with 3 or the top
5 ranked players. The former ( I hope) #6 ranked player cut his own throat
by spending TO much time on industry and NOT enuf on Alliances and His
Defenses. I am ranked in the Mid-20's of the remaining 41 players. Not
counting Dorsai, and Daemons. The moral of the story is if you are gonna be
a target, do it right. If you don't have ALOT of experience ( Like Kev over
there... Who everyone is AFRAID to attack... *grin*) then stay in the middle,
build defenses, and work on industry. Do not concentrate and get behind. The
difference between 3000 industry  and 5000 industry may seem big, but in the
grand scheme where it takes 20K plus to win, it is no biggie to be a few
K behind,as you can catch up... I promise./....
