looking for players for new game From: woods@tuttle.Eng.Sun.COM (Don Woods) Date: Fri, 12 Mar 1993 02:15:38 +0000 PHOENIX is a multi-player space game of diplomacy and military conquest, with an initial phase of economic expansion and exploration. Each player controls a space empire, composed of one of seven different racial types, expanding from a single homeworld. The goal is to control over 55% of the galaxy, either singly or jointly with up to 1/4 of the players in the game. Up to 20 players may play. The size of the galaxy scales with the number of players, and a new map is generated for each game. Phoenix is completely automated and computer-moderated: Each turn, the players send electronic mail to the program that moderates the game; that program collects the orders for the turn, processes the turn, and mails the results back to the players. In addition, an automated "forecast" facility is available to aid players in spotting command errors before a turn runs. The game does NOT run in "real time"; turns run once a week at a fixed time. The amount that a player can accomplish in a single turn is limited by the forces and resources of that player's position, not by the amount of time spent communicating with the program. Games typically end in about 30 turns. Phoenix does not provide a connection service or dial-up access. All access is via e-mail; players are responsible for their own net access. Phoenix runs on the Internet; access from other e-mail nets (Fidonet, GEnie, Compuserve, etc.) is only via gateways provided by those networks. If your e-mail is slow or unreliable, this may hamper communicating with other players or the program. Phoenix has been playtested for five years and the rules are well-balanced and stable. The designers are now interested in expanding the pool of players, so we'd like to run a game with just new players. If you think you might be interested, you can get a copy of the rules (and a separate document on strategy hints) by sending mail to Phoenix-Rules%colossal@eng.com.com or Phoenix-Rules@colossal.eng.sun.com (Since the two documents total nearly half a meg, the requests will be batched up and answered during off hours, so it may take up to a day to deliver. The documents will be split into 50K chunks for mailing.) If you decide you would like to play, send mail to me (woods@sun.com) to sign up for the game. A starting date for the game will be set as soon as there are 20 people signed up, or if signups seem to be tapering off. For now, we'd like to limit it to just one new game. If you have any questions, send them to woods@sun.com. (c) PHOENIX is Copyright 1988-1993 by Steven Goodman, Doug Garrett, and Don Woods. All rights reserved. -- -- -- Don Woods.
