Galaxy: Yet another idea to change a perfectly good game From: bruneau@griffin.emba.uvm.edu (Mark L Bruneau) Date: Sat, 20 Mar 1993 06:50:05 +0000 Greetings Fellow Galaxians, I've been thinking about the battle algorithm lately. As of right now, a ship with a gun has an equal chance to hit any enemy ship when it fires. Wouldn't it make more sense to go for your enemies capital ships, and ignore little popguns or drones? I was thinking it would be a good idea to slightly weight the chances of hitting a bigger ship. Nothing too dramatic, just a slight increase. If A's ships are attacking B's 20 ships, and an A ship fires, A would have a 5% chance to hit any particular ship. Or a 1% chance to hit any particular ship, if B had 100 ships. I propose to increase the chance of hitting a "particular ship". Perhaps a multiplier of 1 for every 10 mass, perhaps every 20. So: Mass Multiplier or Mass Multiplier 1-10 1 1-20 1 11-20 2 21-40 2 21-30 3 41-60 3 31-40 4 ... 41-50 5 51-60 6 ....to whatever mass a player might build. Implementation might go something like this. A mass 60 ship would be assigned 6 chances in the pool, a mass 1 ship would be given 1 chance in the pool. So if you had 10 ships, 9 of mass 1, and 1 of mass 60, there would be 9 chances to hit a mass 1 ship, and 6 chancesto hit a mass 60 ship. The size of your probability pool would be 15, not just 10. This effect would quite noticeable at small group numbers, but would have a lesser effect on the battles of huge fleets. Which seems reasonable, since a small battle would be more focused, and a large battle would be a wild melee for all concerned. This would also have the effect of diminishing the importance of flak...which may or may not be desirable. Ship design would most likely become a lot more critical. I can't wait to see comments on this idea... Mark --------------------------------------- Mark L.
