Galaxy: A few thoughts From: kitten@scoraz.resp-sci.arizona.edu (Bruce Saul) Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1993 06:41:47 +0000 I have 'won' as part of an alliance in three different games of galaxy. Here are a few observations. In game with corners, corners are wonderful: In two of my three games I was in a corner. This meant I had two possible enemies. I allied with one, and crushed the other. Never underestimate diplomacy: On my own my play is mediocre. I don't have the time to 'optimize' ships, or routes, or economic development. But I know how to pick players who are doing so. The difference in apparent skill levels amongst players is more a question of how much time a player has than anything else. When picking your allies at the beginning of a game look for folks who always seem to have time to answer your mail. These are the folks who will make up combined battle plans for an alliance and construct attack matrices for your wars. Work hard to survive the early turns if pressed. Make any deal which will let your core worlds remain unbombed. Not only is it likely that you will be able to rally support to attack your enemies but a lot of folks find they cannot maintain their games. In the omega game run by the folks in Washington I was being pummelled when my attacker was suddenly overwhelmed by responsibilities at his school. Oh, lots of other stuff. Bruce /Wolfen/Sindarin/Amber/Griffin/Dragon/Aesir and a host of others. :-) Up
