Atlantis vs. Olympia From: skrenta@casbah.acns.nwu.edu (Rich Skrenta) Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1993 18:18:28 +0000 I'd like to hear what people think of the simplifications Russell has made in Atlantis over the T'Nyc/Olympia model. Has he burned away the cruft, leaving only the worthwhile features, or have important elements of the game feel been lost? The most important simplification seems to be the lack of time within a turn. Orders either take zero time or the whole month. Furthermore, orders are resolved in phases, i.e. all FORM's are done before ACCEPT's, which always happen before ATTACK's, etc. It's as if all Olympia orders were either zero time or took one day, and the turn was one day long. This nicely eliminates many synchronization problems. Things like distance between regions, going faster if you have a horse, and just where are you while you're traveling also drop out. But do players miss the day-by-day play? Or is it good riddance? -- Rich Skrenta <skrenta@rt.com> Referenced By Up
