Summary of Riddle responses From: baidins@dori.cis.udel.edu (Juris Baidins) Date: Fri, 21 May 1993 18:30:14 +0000 Thanks to all who responded with answers (some 15 people). Drawn to a stranger, a girdle-breaker was a greycloak born in the year of trees defied the powers while still standing tall yet entrapped by the sweetest power of all. Three candidates came out best: Luthien Tinuviel, Elwe Thingol and Beren One-hand. Luthien was drawn to a stranger (Beren) who found his way through the Girdle of Melian (the protective barrier arround Doriath). She was the daughter of Thingol and so could be said to be a "greycloak" and was born in the First Age. She helped Beren to fight and rescued him from captivity (this would be defying the powers). Finally, she was trapped by love for Beren. Problems with her case is the contortion needed for greycloak and the year of trees. Elwe Thingol was drawn to Melian (the Maiar who set up the Girdle of Doriath who trapped him for a while (Thingol could be said to be entrapped by two powers, love and Melian). He defied the call to go to the Undying land and stayed in Middle Earth. Thingol means "greycloak" and he was born in the First Age (the year of trees). Elwe was also the tallest of all men or elves (standing tall). Finally, his decision to go to war may have broken the Girdle (this is the weakest part of the case, the poster was not sure if this caused the Girdle to break). Beren One-hand was drawn to Tinuviel and could be said to have broken the Girdle of Melian by finding his way through it. He was given a grey cloak to wear and was also born during the first age. He could also be considered to be entrapped by the sweetest power of all, love for Luthien. He defied Thingol and Morgoth (certainly powers). The main problem I have with Beren is the greycloak contortion. Anyway, the turn will be processed May 27 and I will know if my guess of Beren One-hand is considered right. Thanks again to all who responded. Any clarifications regarding the year of trees, greycloaks or girdle breaking will be appreciated. -- Juris Baidins baidins@cis.udel.edu Referenced By Up
