In NIC, I just conquered an NPC village with slave soldiers defending.
The population were human slaves.

That means slave soldiers are possible, but whether a player can train
them is another question.

Another question:
  The rulebook states that slaves reproduce at a reduced rate.
  Do slave populations produce normally?
