DM: The Good Ole Days ..... From: dao@deadhead.mitre.org (David A. Ondzes) Date: Fri, 28 May 1993 13:13:25 +0000 There has been alot of DM bashing and AG praising going on lately. I figure it might be a good idea to tell you about my experience in DM (9 years) and AG (3 months) I started back when the game was invented. I ran the Skull Smashers in arena 5 on its first turn. My first 2-3 years of DM were probably my most enjoyable. Back then no one had figure out the game and any rollup could be run well. One of the best designs of the time was a high size Basher with lot of STR & CON, running 10-1-10 bash using a maul. These guys were very successful and often racked up the kills. No one ever ran TP scum. There were countless theories on how to design & run warriors. In fact Mob Boss (now Sir Scrag) made this 20 page book on which stats to train and when for each style. Now a days, newbies are handed everything on a silver platter, especially the NET-newbies; I think you guys are missing 70% of the fun that I had because I had to figure out how the gae works. I guess, if I was in your position then I would take the advice also, because if you do not then you will get pounded by all the warriors out there that have good design (Except of course if you fight my guys, who generally tend to be puds, more on that later). pretty soon I will be releasing the design of the last guy I ever make in DM. I do not think I will stop playing any time soon, I have put too much into my Primus & ADM guys to give them up. I do not think to favorably about RSI, they are made alot of promises about changes to the game that have never happened, ie training in another style, learning special weapon skills. There are obvious things wrong with DM that they do not attempt to fix, for instances the Champion class in tournament, there are so many sandbaggers that no warrior just entering the Champions class has a chance to TC. They are constantly having printer problems and the reason being is that they are TOO cheap to buy repair contracts for their printers and try to fix them themselves. I realize that I am just kinda rambling here, sorry. About AG .... I am sure, one of the reason why I like it is because it is new. But some of the other things that I like are: a) running different races, Half-Troll, Lizardman b) picking my own stats c) no stupid stat-skills problem d) unlimited advancement e) 7-8 figths a turn f) adventuring g) unique features to each guild h) can worship a Diety i) magic (a very nice feature) j) more control over fighting strategy k) resurrection fund l) alot less WRONG ways to design guys then DM I think I will enjoy AG for a long time to come. In fact a friend of mine, who played DM for about 1 year (during my 5th to 6th year in DM) is about to start playing AG. He said that AG look alot more fun then DM ever did. David Ondzes Up
