Dean would be a good person to answer this, he had an interesting experience in
NIC in the UK. It goes something like this.....

Dean attacks and conquers the lair, the monster within was just under 50% wounded
so it looks as if the lair had been previously conquered (it had been twice
attacked by the same force).
Dean submits orders to empty the lair, by the time they go through the lair has
been taken by someone else, easy to do as its only defended by a badly woudned
monster.

I've got my eye on a lair in NIC and I think after conquering it I'll
probably issue conquer orders for a few more turns, until I can get the stuff
out.
