I posted this a while back, guess its time to post again:

What the terms mean:
		CF - Combat Factor, basically Hit points, its the amount of damage
                     your character or soldier can take.
		AF - Attack Factor, the amount of damage you dish out (this is
                     modified by various factors relating to you Invulnerability and
                     Damage ratings as described in the rule book). AF divides into
                     two values Melee AF and Missile AF.
		DF - Defense Factor, your resistance to damage (again modified by
                     INV/DAM as above). When someone attacks you the amount of damage
                     you take is his AF didvided by your DF, the resultant figure is
                     subtracted from your CF.

Calculating The Values.

CF -
	Racial CF + (Personal Combat * 5)    [Soldiers multply Training level by 4]

DF -
	Racial DF + (Personal Combat / 0.3) + Armour DF + Combat Skill Bonus

The Armour DF is of course improved by enchanting and includes DF given by
	a sheild. The Combat Skill bonus could be +2 for a Knight or -1 (?) for
	a Berserker.

AF -
	The AF is a bit more complex, the values given next to weapons in the tables
	are AF Modifiers (AFM), as are the values given by Combat skills such as
	Knight(50), Swordmaster(100 with Sword) etc. You also get racial AFMs (eg.
	5% for a Civilised Troll) and an increased AF from having higher Strength
	and Dex than the racial normal. Once you have calculated you total AFM
	(by adding in all the bits) take this figure as the percentage increase
	to your CF, the resultant value is your AF.

Strength and Dex bonuses are given for each point of STR or DEX above the
	racial normal. For each point you get a 5% increase in your AFM.

The easiest way to make this clear is to do an example.

Example Char. : Elf Knight in Plate Armour (Magic) with a Power 4 Mithril
					Sword. PC is 25. His STR is 10 above Racial, his DEX is
					normal.

CF - Racial Norm + PC * 5 =
		     15      +   125  = 140

DF - Racial Norm + PC / 0.3 + Armour + Combat Skill Bonus  =
	          2      +    6.6   + (12+2) + 2                   = 24

AFM - DEX/STR Bon. + Skill Bonus + Weapon Bonus =
			10*5       +    50       + 80 + 300     = 480

Melee AF - CF + (CF * AFM/100) =
	          140 + (140 * 480/100)= 812

All of the above info came from an article by Micheal Powell in a publication
whose name I don't know! It was passed on to me by Dean (who appears to have
forgotten it) and I've found it very useful.

However.... I've found some strange things, my NIC (UK) Dwarf went into
battle with a Magic Dart/ Shortsword which should have given him the same
Melee and Missile AF's but his Missile AF was half his Melee. There are
also adjustments for tactics (+5% for each level of tactics difference
in your favour, comparing Force leaders) and suprise (+50% if you suprise
your opponents) but I'm not sure exactly how these apply. Anybody know?

The other thing to remember is the formula for adjusting for INV/DAM values
which is given in the Legends rule books, although I'm not quite sure how it
works - it says:

If you are being attacked there is a modifier to your DF as follows:

((Their DAM - Your INV)/2) + 1

I think the basic idea is that if you have a high INV than they need a
	high DAM to do their full AF's worth of damage. But if you have a high
	DAM and go up against someone with low INV you will wont do more damage.
