This is all true.  However, it seems to me that something which is quite
useful for the for the six months or a bit longer is certainly
desirable.  Shanah troops are really nice when you are too poor to
train knights, and furthermore are substantially better than them.  And
even after the first six months it might be occasionally desirable to
train some of these guys.  BTW, you get 22 free troops with the holy
symbols, as spells cost -1, and if one is willing to devote a priest
to training he can chip in 2 mana per train or so, making it 48 troops
a turn.  48 Bsd level 15 troops are almost as good as 90 regulars,
though not quite.
