Re: Legends Factions From: john.osborne@xonxoff.com (John Osborne) Date: Tue, 20 Jul 1993 02:42:00 +0000 TW> From: Theodore Wadsworth <tw1t+@andrew.cmu.edu> TW> If you are the only one in your factin does that make you the faction TW> leader? or only the leading player candidate? There are essentially two categories: Each faction has a non-player factional leader. For instance in Realm Games this would be Queen Illacia for the Elven Hierachy, Desnom the Mighty for the Hand of Vol, etc. This of course has little practical significance in the game, since they don't *generally* do anything unless they are controlled by a player. Most factions also have a player faction leader. It is not required that this player control the NPC faction leader, in fact some factions will never control their NPC factional leader. The NPC leader may have been influenced away by another faction(sic), or perhaps no player in the faction is capable of influencing their leader. Therefore almost all factions will have a player leader. There is a real need in Legends to have at least one player in the faction know exactly what is going on so a general strategy can be formulated. If you are the only player in the faction, you are by default the faction leader, although it is a misnomer seems you aren't actually leading anybody. Assuming you are serious about winning you are expected as faction leader (even if you are the only player, is this your case Theodore?) to recruit other players into "your" faction. Any players will of course come to view you as their faction leader, and rightfully so, since you have been doing all the factional type work and are the "founding" member of the faction. From personal experience I can tell you that it is very hard to recruit other players into your faction at first, since most players will hesitate to join a small faction. You may have to "embelish" the # of players in your faction by counting those players who are allied, or say they will join soon. The player will be surprised when he sees how small the faction really is, but once he is in a faction, he's in for good.<grin> But once you hit a dozen or so players, people will phone you and the faction will gather a momentum of its own. In my case about the last half of the faction joined in just a few weeks, while it took several months to get the 1st dozen. TW> Is there anything to be gained by being a faction leader? Large phone bills! :) The player faction leader is also considered by some to have won an "individual victory" but there are degrees here. If the faction leader doesn't accomplish any victory conditions himself, doesn't help out his fellow faction members, doesn't organize or plan strategy etc and by some miracle the rest of the faction doesn't depose the incompetent twit AND the faction wins anyway...(highly unlikely) then IMHO faction leader can hardly be said to have won an individual victory. Every player has a sense of what they have done individually to help their faction win. Many players (myself included) consider the player who has done the most to help their faction win to have won a TRUE individual victory. TW>Is there any formal recognition of "leader" (Olde Grand Poobah)? Almost all factions formally recongnize a leader, and larger factions may have various other players acting as regional leaders, ambassadors, cartographers etc. The factional leader is generally recognized as such by other players if they have some or all of the following features: 1)Elected or declared as faction leader. 2)The most, or one of the most powerful positions in the faction. 3)Have been in the faction the longest (declared early in the game) 4)The founder of a player created faction. 5)An experienced Legends player. 6)No social life, and who's idea of a good time is spending Friday night on the modem and/or phone telling another member the stats of Darkmaster Hellbeasts and bragging about his turn. :) Some factions may recognize two or more leaders. Different players in the same faction may recognize different leaders. Of course the latter usually means civil war, uncommon, but not unheard of in Legends. Hope this helps.
