It's been a few years, but I used to play merchants all the time.  The trick
to winning is to have good allies you can trust, and to not let your score
get so high that your allies turn against you.  Then have a big stockpile
ready to dump on the last turn (and a backup plan if you miscalculate which
turn is the last! ;-)  Empire builders make good allies, as well as apostles
and beserkers, but don't underestimate the apostles Jihad and the beserkers
PBB's at the end of the game.  I came in very close second on my first game
because I underestimated the points my apostle ally would get during his Jihad.
