Email game: Senator, v2.0 From: rjr@titan.ucs.umass.edu (Richard J. Resnick) Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1993 17:43:47 +0000 Friends, please read on if you are interested in a possible email game... Last spring, I ran an email game called "Senator", which was a moderate success for a time, until I ran out of free time to continue running it. It was essentially a game with no rules, where the players propose and vote on rules of the game, and then try to "win" or "lose" according to the rules that they create. We had about 30 or so players, and we had some interesting things going on. Even up until the end, there was no way to "win" the game (the group seemed reluctant to define the winning terms). Here are some of the rules we had enacted up until the time of disbandonment: o If 5 of the rules you propose are voted into effect, you become an "Ace Senator". Furthermore, all the other players must write you a letter of congratulations, or lose their voting privileges for the week. o A full system of trading was implemented, but no rules were made concerning the acquisition of goods, and as such, players began to invent strange items and trade them randomly. I recall Ace Senator Lord Burp invented a good number of Dark Gooey Things. o The official mascot of the game was voted in as the Raspberry Blender. o A system of criminal justice was implemented, although it was loose around the edges. Because of this, virtually every Senator became a criminal in less than two game turns. These are just a very small few of the many rules which we voted into being during the 3 or 4 months of the game. It was truly an exciting, hilarious, and interesting game, and I regretted having to shut it down. This summer, I spent alot of time thinking about how Senator could be made better. I am planning to start a new game of Senator, if there is sufficient level of interest. I will take NO MORE THAN 17 players. If you are interested in taking part, drop me a line. Send your letter to: rjr@titan.ucs.umass.edu I use a filter program, so please type your subject line exactly as follows: *SENATOR* Thanks alot for the time and bandwidth. Hope to hear from you.
