remember, of course, that 'swords were all over the place' for the
standing armies of the nobels. Now if you are a knight, or even a regular
infrantry, who is the vast majority of opponents you are going to see...
that's right, irregular peasent militia, non or lightly armored. Only the
very rich or high command officers could afford to wear plate armor and
knew they would mostly be fighting unarmored rabble. No sense carrying a
mace around for the one or two armored opponents you might run into...
this especially applied in those horrible church campaigns where the only
infrantry/calvary wearing plate was the church.

Just a reletivly educated guess at the situations of the times.
