I think the armor ratings are fine as they are.  Each piece of armor should
have its strengths and weaknesses; there should be no "ultimate" suit of
platemail or whatever.  Why?  Game Balance!  The more experience a
gladiator earns, the more tougher he should get, but that doesn't mean that
someone with 100 wins should be invincible.  A newbie with a mace should
always have that remote chance of beating him. What's the fun with playing
a gladiator that can't be hurt?

A smart gladiator will have several suits of armor at his disposal.  If he
expects to go against someone with a mace, theres always padded armor.  Of
course, if he guesses wrong, it'll be a short fight :-).
