ARENA: RANKINGS From: jacobus@rock-opera.cc.purdue.edu (Bryan J. Maloney) Date: Fri, 17 Sep 1993 21:06:41 +0000 Okay, here's my proposal for rankings in arena. It would require keeping track of four variables: First, a basic ranking is generated by taking a percentage win. (Two variables generating a third). Next, a routine ensures that, percentages being equal (to the nearest percentage point or ten percentage point), a fighter with more wins will outrank one with less wins. I would rather see a point system, similar to that used in chess (but with smaller numbers). I don't remember the particulars, but one's ranking in this system is based as much upon the quality of the opposition as the amount of wins one has. After all, a close game in which you lose to a Grandmaster should be worth more on your career record than a close game which you lose to a Tyro. In any case, however, there should be some bracketing mechanism so that some poor schmuck with 3 wins isn't facing somebody with 90 (and experience should be separated from winning fights). -- Bryan Maloney Up
