ARENA Fighting Style Design From: srt@aero.org (Scott 'Dr. Pain' Turner) Date: Fri, 08 Oct 1993 18:05:12 +0000 I'm currently working (sporadically) on the design of Master Arena, the next version of ARENA, which is a gladiator combat game run by e-mail. In the current version of ARENA, gladiators can choose from a small set of fighting styles: Normal, Wasp, Barbarian, etc. In Master Arena, I'd prefer to let people design their own styles by setting style variables to whatever values they choose. For example, there might be a variable called "risk". Setting this to a high value would have your gladiator try riskier maneuvers, which would have a better chance of getting a good hit in, but would also increase the risk of a riposte attack. I have a small set of candidate style variables in mind, but I'd like to get some feedback on (1) style variables you'd like to see, and (2) how in general you'd like combat style to work. I'm not particularly interested right now in opinions on weapon skills, or whether or not characters should die, etc. For the moment limit your comments to this question of combat styles.
