Vga-planets Survey Results From: ktmiller@midway.ecn.uoknor.edu (Khanh T Miller) Date: Wed, 01 Dec 1993 02:42:29 +0000 Here are some of the comments made in favor of and opposed to the continued posting of annoucements. Overall, the result was 88% in favor of continuing to post the anouncements (including the person who brought up the subject). As was suggested in the comments, I had posted a message to the alt.newsgroup in asking present and future hosts to cross-post to the pbm newsgroup. However, many just don't bother to add this newgroup in. As to how I post the annoucements, I check where it is posted to and when it was posted. If it is relatively recent (just within 3-4 hours), I forward it here, otherwise I ignore it. I do not spend much time on the news, and thus will certainly not be able to catch all of the annoucements. I do not even care to try. This way, hopefully, someone will be able to get their request in to play in a game. I will put "Vga-planets" in the Subject line and "vga-planets" in the Keywords line, so a KILLFILE should be able to pick it up and ignore it. Thanks to everyone who sent in/posted their opinions on the matter. If anyone wishes, I have a copy of the FAQ I can send you or post (I will not post it more than once every 2-3 weeks). Thanks again. ------------------------------- Personally I think that you should not cross-post as not only is it annoying for hosts sometimes, but it wastes money on the net. I think that it would be better posting a message to alt.vga-planets asking hosts to post to rec.games.pbm also if they could. I think the announcements are perfectly appropriate for this group. No, don't stop. It is a PBM game, and you shouldn't pay attention to whiners, even if they are the majority. Keep posting. You are very appropriate for this group. The other guys need to get a better newsreader. I don't play vga-p, I don't read the announcements and don't really care about the game. Keep posting the notes. I vote for you to go ahead and keep posting them. It's not like they take up more bandwidth than Legends or DM. I think they're appropriate for this group. Continue posting! I don't play VGA planets, and the only place I've heard of it is here. I have no objections to the posting of Vga-planets announcements in rec.games.pbm. (From my understanding, it is a play by email game, so that makes it appropriate for this newsgroup, even if there is also an alt group available.) I have no problem with the posting of requests for players for games, infact I think this is the forum for it. However, since the posts for VGA_planets players could become a daily occurence, I think it should be limited to once a month.(or week) It's enough to catch those who can't access teh alt. family of groups, and it keeps those without kill files from being annoyed by the VGA planets postings. In this case, the complaints against you were out of line. VGA is PBM and therefore belongs here. Not all people have access to alt.games.vga-planets, please continue to post. I don't play it either, but it does belong here. It's a pbm game, and this is rec.games.pbm. Although i do not care about VGA planets, I think you should continue to post as there are probably some who do not get the alt groups who are. The whiners can use a kill file or take all of a second to skip to the next article. For those without access to the "alt" hierarchy, this is their only connection for Planets games. And, as you suggested, detractors are to be pointed to their news readers documentation of Kill files. Volume is not an issue. Keep posting vga planets.... It will catch on soon. Absolutely NOT! Many people (including myself) don't get the alt groups. In addition, VGA planets *IS* a PBM game, therefore belongs in this group. I don't play it myself, but I don't currently play Legends, Galaxy or many of the other games discussed in r.g.pbm either. I could always decide to try them, however, and it's nice to know that if I wait long enough, someone will post a game starting up somewhere. Yes, I do not get the alt.newsgroups, please continue posting. -------------------------- -- Khanh Miller ktmiller@constellation.ecn.uoknor.edu - Up
