REPOST:Duelmasters--WS article From: leeme@cnsvax.uwec.edu Date: Wed, 12 Jan 1994 11:15:01 +0000 REPOST of Phido's WS article * Rich is retired from DM and now living in sunny Cal (minutes away from the Master of Anime, Alan Yip!) Please remember these were the early days of designing the perfect rollup -- Mike Lee From 9/8/88 Three Good Wastes Have you ever read Mark "The Man" Allen's article, "Better than Biff?" He suggests a couple of perfect wastes. The first, 11-14-3-21-21- 3-11, is a dream. How many rollups have you gotten that could be made into this? ZERO!! Come on, let's be realistic, completely ignoring the fact that at 11 ST and 3 SZ this guy will do squat for damage, a TP in drag was how someone so aptly put it. His second is a little better with damage, 15-19-3-14-19-3-11, but he cranks the CN (come on Mark, I heard Prak was scummy, but this is ridiculous), and again a dream rollup. As for Biff's article, his waste looked like 12-16-5-14-20-5-12. Well, this is a pretty awesome warrior (still a little wimpy damage), fairly realistic (1 in 15 rollups could look something like this), but Biff wrote this over a year ago and he probably didn't know anything about the importance of hitting those odd numbers at the time (unless he plans on raising stats 5 pts, good luck!). What! I've just criticized Biff Frothingslosh and "The Man," who do I think I am? Well, I'm Phido the Philosopher and my record with wastes is over 70% for over 150 fights, so I have at least some idea of what I'm doing. Now, I don't want to tell you what the perfect waste looks like, because rarely will you get the perfect rollup. Like, let's deal with reality dudes! Someone once said that you want a brick if you make a waste, very true. Keeping this in mind... ST 15 13 11 CN 14 12 12 SZ 7 9 13 WT 15 15 13 WL 17 19 19 SP 5 5 5 DF 11 11 11 Now these are everyday run of the mill rollups (low speed is a prerequisite though); I'd say you get one of these every 7 rollups. Each has good endurance, does good damage (great if you get lucky), each can take a lot of damage in 1 or 2 CN raises, I don't want scum, I just want to take those lucky shots that get through my excellent defenses. So much for attributes, how about his skills; experience tells me each should get experts is attack, initiative, and parry in about 5 to 7 skills each. And with a 30+ WT/WL combo, learning will be great. Not bad, eh? But how do you fight them? I'm not going into great detail, certain things work for certain warriors, but here's three sets of numbers which will give you something to work from... 2-2-2 (1st, 2nd), 6-3-6 (3rd), 9-3-9 (4th). I don't say what to do after the 4th, because most fights will be over by then, and it really matters who you expect to fight. Like I said, three good wastes, and run properly (don't wear APA when challenging a TP, or ALE vs a lunger, and don't try to get the jump on strikers), they'll win about 7 of every 10. Brought to you by Phido (Rich Boettner), an incredibly unstable guy with dozens of hangups, insecurities, and teams. Miscellaneous (102), Peacekeepers (102), We Be Awesome, Of Mice and Men, 4th Time's A Charm, etc. Up
