Mage PBeM Announcement From: sechilds@cs-acad-lan.Lakeheadu.Ca (S E CHILDS) Date: Tue, 01 Feb 1994 12:55:35 +0000 He ran... Not blindly or without a sense of purpose, at least at first. His first thought had been that the city would offer many places where he could escape his pursuers, but this was proving a fallacy. He remembered the face, the face of someone he thought he knew, someone he thought he understood, someone he thought he loved. He remembered the words..."No matter where you run, no matter where you hide, no matter how far you go, you will always be here, in this room." He ducked into a nightclub, shoving a crumpled bill into the hands of one of the bouncers. The dissonant chords and the hypnotic beat of the music game the place an alien feel, but it was dark, a place to hide... As he sat down at one of the tables scattered around the place he began to think of plans and tactics, ways he could avoid Them, those who he first thought he could trust. But with his thoughts came the damming realization that he could not escape... He watched the dancers, gyrating to the pulsing, overwhelming beat and he saw the face, the face that had pronounced the words that had sealed his fate. Their eyes met and a shiver colder than the arctic wind passed through his body. They've found me already! And he knew despair, but when he looked up again the face was that of a stranger... They're trying to scare me, weaken me, make me give up without a fight. Never! But the seed of death had been planted, and he knew too well what he was up against to be optimistic of his chances. His rational mind told him, move yourself. They know you're here. That was no trick of the light, they've tracked you. But, his irrational mind, that part of him that worked the magick told him that he couldn't leave, he couldn't leave the room... "Back so soon", the face asked, "I thought it would take you more than an hour till your thoughts brought you back to me." He looked around, he was back in the study, the place where he had spent so many wonderful hours, now a place of horror. He staggered to his feet. I've got to get out of here. He glanced around, that's it: the window. Bracing himself, he leaped...broken glass and... He glanced around, "What's going on? Leave me alone!" The gun, he'd end this once and for all. He pulled it out, it felt good in his hand, solid, real. "Fool! You think that toy can hurt me?" There was an explosion, a projectile was flung at tremendous speed directly at the face, his face, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The eyes glanced at the body lying on the floor of the study, still holding the impotent toy in it's now lifeless hand. "Fool. There is no escape...death is the only escape."
