I've seen this before, it may be because the news group on your news server
is short lived or it may be that you are seeing replies to messages which
have been sent with limited distribution.  Say someone in the US posts a
message to `us' only and someone replies to `world'.

Just a quick point - are you the same Simon Nicholson who is in NIC?
