Some good advice has already been given to this question, but there is one
thing important missing:

To find a dungeon, you _MUST_ issue an I 0 order in the correct sector. It
is _not_ enough just to walk through it. This means you will spend several
turns issuing M and I orders alternately, with moving only a single square
each time. Time consuming, but potentially rewarding once you find your
dungeon.

This method should only be used _after_ visiting a library, getting a
reasonable clue to where there is a point in looking.
