I may have spoken too soon, as it is quite a some time since I last bought either of the
Weapon skill alternatives. And so it might be that they now have implemented a difference
in the Weapon training stuff. I would advice you to take nothing for granted, not even
what you hear from other players. (Or maybe especially what you hear from other players.)

However, I have had no problems with buying Use Edged Weapons with my axe using characters,
