Material wanted for new, NON PROFIT, newspaper From: wes@dale.canberra.edu.au (Wes Nicholson) Date: Wed, 14 Sep 1994 12:40:37 +0000 Phoenix is a new, NON PROFIT, newspaper aimed primarily at Australian roleplayers, but also at Science Fiction fans, heroic fantasy readers, comic collectors, anime fans, Magic: the Gathering devotees, PBMers, and just about any other hobby that has a significant crossover with roleplaying. The main focus is on what's happening in Australia, although material from all over the world is welcome. There is a lot out there that is relevant to everyone. If you're reading this article, you may have something to contribute. The first issue is due for release at the end of October, and from there it will hopefully be a quarterly NON PROFIT publication. What we need for the first edition is material from interested contributors. The kind of thing we want is: Reviews of new games, books, computer games, movies, or anything else of interest to our target audience; Good places to eat for out of towners visiting a convention; Announcements about conventions. Please include dates, location, fees, and a contact address or phone number, or both. The con doesn't have to be a gaming con, Science Fiction, Star Trek, M:tG, comics, anime, whatever. It also doesn't have to be in Australia - we'll announce a con in Outer Mongolia if we get details. People travel, so why not let them know what's happening wherever they're headed; Short fictional works. Anything from 400 or so words to around 2500 words is most welcome; Artwork is something we desperately want. Computer scanned files are preferred, in gif, TIFF, pcx, or just about any PC readable format. We can take originals if you really want to snail-mail them, and we WILL return original art; Feedback on conventions you've been to recently. Just don't send anything libelous; Local club information. Any club in the fields mentioned above, or any related field that I've stupidly left out, is welcome to list a contact point and a brief outline of what you do; Classified ads. For issue one, these are free, but we reserve the right to limit the number of ads we accept from any individual; Anything else of general interest. Things we will NOT print: Anything defamatory or libelous; Anything pornographic; Anything we deem to be in poor taste; Anything that would be a flame on the net; Anything copyrighted by someone other than the submitter. We will contact the copyright owner if we get anything like this, assuming we spot it. Phoenix will be fully funded (we hope) by commercial advertising. It is a NON PROFIT venture (did I mention that already), put together by a bunch of gamers in Canberra, Australia, who are fed up with having no local rag that meets our needs. Now, before you Australian Realms fans start flaming me, we are NOT trying to compete with them. Oz Realms is a fine publication, it just doesn't cover the kind of things we feel need to be covered. Look at the list above and see how many of those are in Oz Realms before you get too aggro, please. For the first issue, we aren't in a position to pay for contributions. That may change at a later date if the whole thing doesn't flop after one edition. If we do happen to make this work, and pay for itself, any profit will be distrbuted among the contributors. The publication itself is NON PROFIT. What we will do for the first edition, and any subsequent ones, is send a copy of Phoenix to all contributors, whose material we print, so any budding professionals among you can put it in your portfolio. Edition 1 is currently planned to be 5,000 copies, given away free at Hobby Fest, a weekend of hobby and leisure activities to be held in Sydney, Australia, on October 29 and 30. Interested contributors, please respond by e-mail to this message. Contributions for the first issue are due by 9 am, Saturday, October 8th, Australian Eastern Standard Time. That's Saturday morning in most of SE Asia, Friday afternoon in North America, and Friday night in Europe. If you want more information before you decide to write something, I'll try to answer your questions, or put you in touch with someone who can.
