OLYMPIA: Why do you play? From: morrow@romulus.rutgers.edu (John Morrow) Date: Fri, 21 Oct 1994 01:02:11 +0000 Since this group doesn't see a lot of Olympia traffic, I thought I'd ask a question of the players to stimulate a little conversation here so the people on this group don't think we are all miserable... :-) Why do you play Olympia? (e.g. what do you enjoy about Olympia?) My own answer can be summarized as: I enjoy playing Olympia because it provides a simple yet colorful simulation of a fantasy world where human players interact with one another without set goals. I prefer playing against human opponents instead of computers and I really enjoy "double-blind" computer games. I also enjoy economic and military simulations. Olympia is, in many ways, like a huge simulation game where players only get to see what their pieces can see. On top of that is a role-playing layer via unit naming and the Olympia Times. While other games have some or many of the features of Olympia, I think Olympia is pretty unique in they way it ties all its parts together. What do the veterans of other games think?
