My understanding was that soldiers that provide a Guard rating (Guards,
Knights, some others) provide that guard rating to all character in the
force with the soldiers.  Slot leaders seem to get an additional bonus.

If the target has Thief skill, that might also help him.  Invisibilty
adds 50% or 100% to ALL covert actions, so you might want to try again
after going invisible.

If your target has a high PC, he will be difficult to assassinate.
Did you use poison (gives a small bonus) and will probably leave the
target with a little present.

By the way,what was the assassin's PC?  That is a  major factor in determining
assassination success.
